newer used transmission?

So I need a transmission rebuild in the future and I was wondering (even though I think I already know the answer but i'm just double checking), would it be more worth to go try and find a transmission from a car junkyard or just go to an auto shop and have them just replace the entire thing? I got a quote from an auto shop and they said it would be $1500 including labor but I went to a car junkyard yesterday, they sell transmissions for like $100 but all the 98-04 v6 transmissions were taken out of the cars (which i'm not surprised at all). should I keep searching or just bring my car into a shop in the future?

My history with junkyard transmissions has been... very bad.

In my car, the original automatic transmission was slipping like crazy, jerked around, wouldn't go into drive, etc. I was able to find a used transmission from another '94. I drove to pick it up, took it to my mechanic, and had him install it. After $500+ for R&R, three months later the trans gave out again. drove it until it wouldn't go into drive at all.

After previously going through the same with my 2000, I gave up and let it sit for a while while I saved up for the 5speed swap.

If I had the need again, I would rebuild my own before going back to a junkyard. But, that's just from my own experience. You might be able to find a wrecked car that was otherwise in great condition, but with transmissions there's no way to look at it and see how the internals are. It's a gamble unless you can actually drive the vehicle before it is pulled... which is a very unlikely circumstance..

Best of luck to you.

Thanks. I did see a few mustangs but there were only two 98-04 models and both were totaled completely with the transmissions already gone. One was auto too which wasn't helpful at all so I guess my best bet is to still just wait until I have the money or just go for a GT
