5w30 to 10w40

For my 2000 v6s oil change I decided to use 10w40 after being convinced by an old friend that it would be a good thing for my 130,000 mileage mustang. Is this good for my car?

My dad ran a thicker viscosity oil in his cars with higher mileage cuz in his words, "there aren't as tight of tolerances as when the motor was new so you need thicker fluid to fill the spaces" he would lecture me more about it but I'd just tune out lol. I bet it work really good in hot climates too

From what I heard you can only damage your seal if you switch back and forth between synthetic and regular oil, changing the weight wouldn't do damages, because depending on your climate your suppose to run a thicker/thinner oil.

Re: 5w30 to 10w40

The major difference between synthetic oil and conventional oil is how it reacts to changes in temperature. Synthetic oil will flow freely at subzero temperatures, when conventional oil takes on the consistency of honey, and it will not thin out at high temperatures, or break down under rough service, when conventional oil will lose some of its protective capacity.

Re: 5w30 to 10w40

Synthetic is better BUT! on older cars have trouble holding synthetic cause them to leak from old and bad seals, in which case regular conventional oil is thicker and wont leak.

You should be fine, I would keep an eye on the oil check on it see if any is missing or any leaks under your car. Your only at 130k you shouldnt have nothing to worry about, I have yet to break the 100k getting closer tho 91.5k lol

Also synthetic have tiny microscopic platelets the lay flat on surfaces to provide a more slippery surface.

I wouldn't worry about changing oil weight unless you are starting to lose some oil pressure.Newer engine materials and lubricants are much better than what we had in the "good old days" and the engines and oils last much longer than they used too.
