replace just one tire or both?

my passenger side front tire popped yesterday and I didn't find out until today when I took it onto the road (thank god I realized it before I got too far away from my house). my question is, should I just get a replacement for that one tire or should I switch out both the left and right side? which is cheaper?

Well it's cheaper to buy one obviously..

It's cheaper just to replace the one. But you've gotta check the other one out. If you've got less then 4/32 tread depth you might as well replace it also because the new tire will have over 7/32 and you don't want there to be a big difference in tread hight. Your car could start pulling to one side if the tread heights are substantially different. 2/32 is the minimum depth for state inspection btw.

Re: replace just one tire or both?

so if i were to bring it into a shop (most likely a gas station), should i just tell them to check the tread on both tires and see if it's necessary to replace both?

Nah, dude. Check it yourself. If you ask them, of course they're going to tell you to replace both of them.

Here, this'll help.

Re: replace just one tire or both?

either use a penny to check your tread or buy a tread tool for a couple bucks at any autoparts...

i'm a believer of replacing two at a time btw, unless one side has at least half tread (usually if i have the other tire below half tread, but above 4/32nds i'll put it in the garage as an emergency replacement)
