what should i pay for a catback?

im looking into doing the exhaust on my car but wanted to know what a good price for a catback is? the guy down here quoted me at around $600 for dual piping with 2 flowmaster super 40s. is that good? bad? what can i try and lower him down to?

Re: what should i pay for a catback?

twice as much as normal around here....of course if you go with 40's and not a generic like thrush you'll pay $200 for mufflers alone (thrushs you'd pay under $100 for both)

then average price per side on tubing at any shop i've been to is $50 a side from where the y pipe is cut off to the tail pipe ends...added in about an hour in labor you're in the $400 range for flowmasters on there or $300 for thrushes

if you have any more questions just ask

a good tip is to call every shop you're willing to drive out too...get the same quote at all of them then call other shops and give them the price of other shops...they will wear each other down for the business because custom exhaust aren't hard to build. so it's an easy profit for them.

---------- Post added at 12:03 AM ---------- Previous post was at 12:01 AM ----------

another good tip to save on cash is to buy a used GT tail pipe set either from Craigslist, or a salvage yard....that's a cheap way to build a custom setup

all the exhausts off the GTs in our junkyards are either completly destroyed or already taken. I really like the sound of those thrush mufflers. im getting those thanks a lot man! but on the topic of mufflers, turbo or chambered muffler would sound the deepest or loudest?

My exhaust sucks. It rattles really bad and there's a LOT of vibration. If I get this job I might have coming up I'm deffenatly going to replace the whole thing.

Re: what should i pay for a catback?

Depend if you go catless... but catless with flow 40`s is only very loud when you make a cold start... beside... its not so bad... but the sound inside is just INSANE!! some peoples with GT tought i got a v8 under de hood!

Thrush... is cheap and there a reason for that... the sound will be not so bad the first 5 months but after its gonna start to sound "ricer"...

my 2 cents...

If you want to do it... do it right the first time!

the 40's are a tiny bit louder then the welded series thrushs, but in the end it's more if the price difference is worth it to you

Correction, they are just not car enthusiast. My point was not to get bashed on cuz it doesn't sound like a v8, it was to point out it sounds nice.

saying it sounds like a BA sixxer works just as well

on a side note last night at work i tossed a flow 40 on one exhaust pipe and one flow 44 on the other exhaust pipe...had my coworker give the car some revs. i think my next mufflers may be a 44 just to test them out.

I have x-pipe duel flowmaster 44 and I think they sound great even got complements on the sound from my cousin that drives a 67 cammaro v8. He was a little surprised when I said it was v6. But than again I have never had 40's on my sixxer

What does being in Oklahoma have to do with still having factory cats? We don't have emissions testing here...

The shop that put my duels on said he couldn't take the cats off because it was illegal or something like that

It's illegal for any shop to remove them you just have to find a shop that's willing to turn the other way. And around here in NY I can't find anyone who will do a dual conversion for less than 500-600 bucks. It's bull.

Yea I'm just trying to find a shop that will do it without charging me up the a$$. And my set up is very simple. I only want a custom h fabbed from my stock y and 2 40s or 44s dumped before the axle

Re: what should i pay for a catback?

why fab it from the Y? just get a used h off of any 94-04 GT and they'll just weld it u and it'll be cheaper in the long run and look better
