Able to start with a voltage meter. uhm.. ?!?

Alright. I've gotten my 00 w/ a 03 motor to start. This is how - which raises many questions that I'm checking with you guys to see if what I'm assuming is correct.

I was checking voltage to the starter when the key was turned, got nothin' - I grounded out on end and put the positive from the meter to the top wire on the starter sol the car cranked over and started... Turned it off with taking the key out of the "on" position.

Alright... So does this just mean that I have the wires crossed? or does this mean the start sol or starter it's self is bad?

Also does anyone have a pic of the wires going into there starter sol.. Would like a visual to know exactly whats going on.
