Transmission fluid - Edge 2001

I have a new edge 2001. I was wondering if anyone knew how to change the transmission fluid and which one to buy. My transmission feels a little funky right now and a buddy of mine recommended I change the transmission fluid. I got the car at 89K miles, it now has 108K never changed the tranny fluid

Take the pan off and let the fluid drop

Okay, which one is the trans fluid pan? I don't wanna unscrew the wrong bolts and end up unscrewing the wrong pan xD and is there like a gasket around the pan that should be replaced after the whole process?

Yes there is a gasket tht lines the top of the pan and you'll meed to change that when you drop the pan the have a bad habbit of stretching and not going back in and you also need to take a magnet and get all the shavings outta the bottom of the pan

if you're gonna do a service change go ahead and pay $15 for a new trans filter...usually when you buy one you get the new gasket in the box so that's a good thing.

Is your transmission automatic? I always hear that on automatics when you change the fluid with 100k+ miles the transmission usually begins to slip about 5-10k miles later.

If I can find one of those, it would be good and I think I'll do that. And yes it is an auto. But there's my problem. The tranny is already slipping. From first to second it jumps if you don't go super slow

only when you use crap fluid and don't replace the filter while you're in there...swap a qrt of fluid with a bottle of lucas stop slip and you're set if you're worried

Has the tranny been slowly getting worse or did it all of a sudden begin to start slipping? Also you say you it jumps from first to second so you have to drive slow. Are you sure it's not shifting hard? Shifting hard can be another issue besides ur tranny. Just want to be sure before u replace the fluid man

even if the issue at hand isn't fluid related it's still a great thing to change out at his mileage...better now then later i say

You can use Mobil1 Automatic transmission fluid for the T5 transmission.
You can use Amsoil 80-90W for the differential. The differential fluid may need to be changed a few times with some cheap fluid if you find it blue/gray. Once clear, put quality fluid like Amsoil & Ford Motorcraft XL3 LSD Friction Modifier Gear Oil Additive won't hurt.

What's a CEL? Yeah, I guess I'll change the tranny fluid, better now than never. Well the car sort of jumps I guess trying to get out of first gear, it's sort of like someone who doesn't know how to drive a standard and jerks the car changing gears. Are those gasket/filter kits available at autozone or oreilly's?

So you're also saying I have to change my fluid a couple of times to get it right?

I went to back out of the parking lot and went from reverse to drive and heard a big bang I thought I was the the tranny but the driveshaft still turns so it has to be the rear end and I really don't know what broke in it I'm just using this oportuninty to change to an 8.8 with 3:73 and alot of the time its easier to just change the whole thing

CEL= check engine light

the kits are available at any autoparts....and the jumping could be fluid related, torque converter related, solenoid related, etc....start with the cheapest and work your way up...and you'll only need to do it once not multiple times

Ohhhh nahh, my check engine light has never turned on. I feel like the tranny is loose, or the fluid sucks. Thanks, I'm gonna go pick up a kit and replace the fluid, if that doesn't work I'll try out what you told me and go from cheapest to most expensive problem. Thanks everyone

did you have them up the gears in the GT rear while it was out of the car or did you keep the 2:73 gears in it?

in a 99-04 v6 or GT yes...but in sn95's its a bit more tricky...v6's had 2.73s...and GT had 3.08's for autos and 3.27s for 5 speeds

i just wanna make sure he is calibrated for gears if the rear didn't come out of a 5 speed gt

what did they recalibrate the speedo for? a 5 speed GT rear or an auto GT rear? just curious since sn95's had a couple options that NE's didn't

ok what you'll want to do to be on the safe side is to check the gearing yourself...they said 3:27s and it may be...but it could also be a 3:08. If you wanna check it without popping the cover off and having to fill it again..just to be safe

-jack up the back end
-mark the driveshaft with a marker on the bottom
-spin one of the back wheels by hand slowly one full rotation
-as you spin the wheel count the times the mark makes a full turn on the driveshaft

it's simple to read out

just under three turns 2:73
right at three turns 3:08
about a quarter past three turns 3:27

so on and so forth...glad your car feels peppier...it's always a nice upgrade
