Talking Please confirm which gears to put in my mustang

i have a 02 5 speed 3.8l and others in the forum said to use 3.73 gears on a manual and 4.10 gears on a automatic. Why do people not recommend 4.10 gears on a 5 speed if it adds much more get up and go?

Re: Please confirm which gears to put in my mustang

Eh it dont matter, i got a buddy that has a 5-speed with 4.10s.
The only problem with taller gears is, if you put on a power adder u wont hook on your launch

Re: Please confirm which gears to put in my mustang

How's the wear and tear on the engine rps when cruising the freeway.

Anyone an authority on that one. I here it should be installed w/the t-lok at the same time for v6's so there's no 1 tire fire.

Re: Please confirm which gears to put in my mustang

yep def needs t-lok for dual posi but i think the 4.10 gears might put out alot more acceleration than the 3.73 gears

Re: Please confirm which gears to put in my mustang

mine is at about 2400rpms at 70mph, if my buddies math is correct. With 4.10s it should put you around 3500 to 3800 rpms at 65 mph there are quite a few factors in that he cant account for, anybody correct me if im wrong

Re: Please confirm which gears to put in my mustang

with 4:10s you will be doing 2417rpms at 70mph with 275/45/17 tires(26.74 diameter)

my math is correct...

4.10s are the way to go on a v6, we run 4.10s on a 450rwhp cobra and leave the line just fine.

Re: Please confirm which gears to put in my mustang

Re: Please confirm which gears to put in my mustang

ok those numbers i gave you were for a t45, may be a little better with the tremec 3650.

im running 315/35/mikey thompson drag radials, they hook fricken awesome but they are pricey and wear out on the street fast, i paid 700 for 2 shipped, mine hooks solid more due to the suspension, i have fulltubular coilover front and solid race rear. all with no urethane bushings.

Re: Please confirm which gears to put in my mustang

so basically you will save gas on the freeway at 70mph just not in the city.
Would there be any problems not hooking with 4.10 gears if i instal a t-lok and have a race suspension all the way around

, you wont really gain or lose mpg either way

with 3.73 or 4.10's you'll lose a little bit of mpg on the freeway but you probably will gain some driving in town

Re: Please confirm which gears to put in my mustang

My main concern is about any type of premature wear any where as a result of the gear change.

Re: Please confirm which gears to put in my mustang

no premature wear on anything else, we havent found much difference on average for mpg by switching to 4:10s its just more tempting to romp on it so most people lose mpg because of that fact.

"Don't fear the gear!"

4.10's in conjunction with a T-Lok for a V6 is the way to go without a doubt....

I dont know why I had 3.73 in mind for a V6 stick. I thought 4.10 was for Automatic for smoe reason. NO?

Re: Please confirm which gears to put in my mustang

You should know 4.10 will limit your max speed! I got it together with t loc and pick up is really good you can feel it, but it limits my max speed! Also you will need a tuner to make your speedometer work fine, because the gears will make a difference from your actual speed and what your speedo shows!
Here is the video from couple of days ago (bad quality tho)

Another thing to factor in is. Are you going for drag or road course as your primary performance? Also 4.10's will be better for a 1/8 mile, but 3.73 will be better for 1/4 mile. It really just depends on how you plan to use the car. MPG will be about the same either way.

explain...4:10s are fine for 1/4 mile for pretty much anything under 450rwhp.

hes not gonna run out of gear in the 1/4 with a v6...

you will still be able to run well over 120mph.

He will start to lose top end after the 1/8th mile. Have you driven a v6 mustang? I use to own an 04 v6 5spd and even with the 3.27's I could tell I was losing power in late 3rd and 4th. I use to have a gt with an auto so I've had both before. I also never said he couldn't run 4.10's for the 1/4. I just think the 3.73 will be a better match. Also if drag isn't his primary focus then 3.73 would be a better all around gear.
