Lets Talk Gear Ratio!!!

So my 02 mustang isnt really my daily driver, i use my 98 for that. But im building my 02 up for speed and power. Should i go 3:73 or 4:10 gears. I heard you lose MPG on 4:10's but my question is how much city vs highway?

dang thats not much of a loss at all. Now will i see a huge difference in acceleration compared to stock. Also i heard 4:10s max out at 120mph. The guy on that forum could have been bat **** crazy for all i know.

It's more than 120 but lets be honest how often

Very true, just wanted to make sure it could go over. I might not go 120 very often but for that 1 moment when i do, i dont want it to sit at 120 like "What do you want me to do now boss" lol

a few things to think about

1. if you're planning power and speed then why concern yourself with mileage...it only holds you back

2. why do you need to go over 120? you'll never need those speeds even on tracks you're most likely to visit unless it's a road course with a long straight...

3. you won't come close to ever maxing your gears

besides that what are you wanting out of the car in the long run?

^I redlined 4th gear once, factory redline at least haha

If its not you're daily go big, 4.10's will be very fun in an auto car

What if its not an auto, its a t-5. brings up another question, is there a benifit with 4:10 and a t-5 rather than auto.

My understanding of why the 3.73 is better is because of once you're in 5th gear... Essentially the higher the gearing the faster the accel... but once youre in 5th the low gearing becomes better. If you google manual mustang 3.73 vs. 4.10 they probably have a better explanation... But when I was researching for my auto I think that's what I came across

Automatic 4th gear .70
Manual 5th gear .6X (.69 or .68 I forget)

Overdrive gear is not the reasoning behind 3.73's for manual, you have 4 gears to go through with a manual before overdrive, you'll be shifting very quickly with 4.10's compared to 3.73's which can screw you up if you're not the greatest shifter. With an automatic the gears are longer with only having 3 before overdrive, less shifting not to mention the car shifts itself..

Without the gas mileage into perspective, that's why 3.73's for manual and 4.10's for auto.
