Where to start?

I have an utterly stock 2003 v6 Mustang..
I would have bought more, but the price was right for this on.

I'm not the best mechanic ever but i know a few things, what i don't know is where to start.
I want to make this thing fast, but i don't have a bunch of money to spend on it, so it'll have to be a project.

This thing is my every day car, so whatever i do i can't make it only a race car.
Some1 help?

Re: Where to start?

gears and t-lok will be the most notable difference as far as bolt-ons go. 4.10s for auto and 3.73s for manual.

Re: Where to start?

I'd say cold air intake. American muscle has a cai for $75 that from what I hear is just as good as the bbk ones that run $180. I got the american muscle one and installed it myself in about an hour. There are noticeable gains in hp and torque, but not much. I think the sound of the exhaust improved the most from the cai. Also a catback exhaust is good for about 10 hp. MAC has a bolt on catback running $330 I'm planning on purchasing soon.

Re: Where to start?

Do your average bolt ons. Intake, exhaust, headers, and so on. Gears would make a huge difference but a shop needs to install them.

Re: Where to start?

Once you get most of the bolt-on mods, i would invest in a tuner(Diablo or SCT Livewire). That will get the most out of the boltons, and will adjust gear/tire changes, and greatly improve shift points if your an auto.
It seems pricey, ($400) for 3 tunes, but is well worth the money, especially if your an auto.

Exhaust: Magnaflow Dual Exhaust Catback System (99-04 V6) at AmericanMuscle.com - Free Shipping!
Intake: Mustang V6 Cold Air Intake Kit at AmericanMuscle.com - Free Shipping!

This intake is the 75$ one, is it as good as the others?
and is this bolt on exhaust what i need?

Idk anything about gears. Where do you find out about them?

Re: Where to start?

research into the end result you want and work toward it. Exhaust with a drop/rims make a HUGE difference.

Re: Where to start?

As far as rims go, what looks best on my year and model?
I'm partial to black rims but i'm not sure what size to go with.

Re: Where to start?

Stick with a 17-18" rim...
Everything looks pretty good 03 cobras, fr500s, y2k cobras, bullit rims, just depends on what you like.

As for mods to start yourself in the right direction.

> cold air intake (the cheap one from American muscle works just fine)
> dual exhaust system
> Under Drive Pulleys
> Tuner (Sct or diablo)
> Gears (3.73 or 4.10)
> Tlok (ford racing or detroit tru trac)

And for appearance

> Mach 1 chil spoiler
> Lowering springs
> Rims

Those simple things can go a VERY long way.

Re: Where to start?

Welcome to the site!

I definitely agree with Spec about the exhaust, dropping it, and new rims. That alone can make it look like a whole new stang! CAI, a tune and gears are also good starters. Good luck with it!
