probably a crack in the exhaust manifold...very common on our cars thanks to the a/c drip right on it...look for a leak

If it's coming from the passenger side, you'll know it's a manifold leak. 99% of the time if it's coming from that general area that's what the noise is. As stated above it's a really common issue with 99-04's.

Yeah, my girlfriend has the same problem with her '99 V6, it seems like the more she presses the throttle, the faster it ticks.

yes it could be a ticking lifter...easy way to tell...pour a whole bottle of lucas oil stabilizer in your crankcase...see if it gets quieter as you drive

I have this ticking noise too, except it only happens when the engine has warmed up. It's been like this since last summer. When the engine is cold I don't hear anything. It is coming from the passengers side of the engine, anyone know what this could be?

And one more question I have a date tonight would it break down on the way? Or you think I could make it if it is something like a lifter?

No it does not pop at all it's just a steady tick once the engine warms up, and my check engine light is not on.

As for your other question, well I would try not to think about it on the way.

Okay I made it but I sounded like a helicopter and set off every car alarm in the parking garage lol so how do I find an exhaust leak is there something I could spray? And can I use that exhaust repair tape does that stuff work? Or jb weld?

Alright I was talking to some mechanics today and they told me this. Basically the ticking is a lifter that is not getting enough oil too it when everything heats up and expands and said that it won't hurt anything just makes an annoying sound. Also the ticking sound is a sign that you need to change your oil soon.

@SixStang702, the best way to fix your exhaust would be to weld it.

the ticking can happen even just after an oil change even if it's a lifter just to toss that out there..but the mechanics you talked to are pretty spot on if the ticking they are hearing is a lifter.

Will having a crack in exhaust manifold ever turn on a check engine light?

If its a slight squeek like a bird chirp whenever your foot isnt on the clutch then its the throwout bearing

My car ticks when I first start it. Almost positive its coming from the manifold. Goes away after about 5 minutes.

My 13 V6 w/ performance pack does this. At idle it doesn't tick, but when I accelerate above 2k rpm I will hear it. Sounds like gravel rattling very shuttle. Also when take off I hear a thump as well sometimes the engine will rev before actually accelerating. Not sure if this is all one issue causing this. The mechanic at ford checked for spark knock and it wasn't it
