Looking at buying a 99

convertible V6 auto. It has 124000 miles on the clock and the 35 anniversary package. The CEL is on and the owner says it is the lower O2 sensor so I know I need to check that out. What I am asking is what else should I look for on this model? Any particular problems or?

Thanks Mike

Check for any exhaust manifold cracks, and check to make sure the baffle in the valve cover for the pcv valve isn't making too much oil go into your intake manifold. Also find out when the last time the transmission was serviced, my 2000 had major slipping because it wasn't done in a long time from the previous owner.

Check out the convertible top motor and mechanisms thoroughly. It may need replacing as most people don't take great care of them and the life of one is ~10-15 years.

The passenger side manifold is notorious for cracking thanks to the A/C drain hose being positioned right above it. Thermal cracking at it's finest...so you may have to replace headers...great time for some shorties or longtubes

Also keep in mind 99 was the 35th anniversary for the mustang. So all 99 mustang v6's and GT's got the fender badges. That was the only difference from the 2000's.

The special edition anniversary GT's got special interior/exterior treatments. There were no v6's that received this treatment.

Just so you know in case the seller tries to throw b.s. about the car being a special anniversary car.

Thanks I really just need a DD that I am not dumping money into each week like the Jeep. I will check the manifold if it is not cracked is the a way to reroute the A/C drip line so it won't happen. I really would like to trick it out but I have to get my 68 back on the road again.

Also the badge is the only difference that is good to know he has it listed for $2700 cash which is why I am looking at it.

I'm pretty sure you could just add some tubing to re-route the water so it doesn't drip directly onto the manifold. Pretty simple $5 fix.

Yah that seems like a fair price for the car considering year and mileage. Condition always truly determines price so I'm sure you'll have some negotiating room. Sounds like an o2sensor will need replacing so that's ~$40...if the passenger manifold is cracked you'll need new headers so figure that price in as well.

I noticed you said it was an auto...the 4r70W is a pretty decent tranmsission regarding strength and durability, despite what many say. It's the stock shift points and gearing that really hold it back, and that's what people hate. The trans is good to 516 ft lbs which is actually more than the 5r55 in the 05-10's (405 ft lbs).

But as with any auto trans lack of care/maintenance will destroy it. Do pay attention to how it feels and acts when driving...too much slipping and shaking could be bad fluid or it could mean the bands are loose and it's on its way out. I'm sure you know most of this but check out the fluid color, look for bubbles on the dipstick which may convey an air leak or over fill. Also look for any solid residue too...could be a sign of bad bearings/bands which could cost you big time down the road.

Nothing's worse than buying a car to be a reliable dd and a month later it's in the shop needing a new transmission.

Thanks again I will be looking at it this afternoon to see what I can see. I bought the 96 Jeep to be my DD and I have put a lot of time and money into it keeping it that way. Yesterday I told my wife I needed to spend another ~$400 to fix the sway bars, pinon seals, Redo the diffs, and a Plemum kit. She did not look to happy and to tell you the truth I am not, so I told her of the Mustang I found and the cost. She said if it is better shape then get it and sell the money pit. I have a buyer for the Jeep so it will work out nice if the Mustang is in good shape.

A guy at my work has a mid 90's jeep 4x4 that he bought for ~3500 to be a dd and it became a money pit too, so he traded it in for a 00 f150 lol. Not sure what's up with those jeeps, people must beat the livin hell outta them and dump em.

Definitely keep us updated about the mustang...hopefully it works out and you get it!

Well I guess the guy really didn't want to sell it. I called three different time between yesterday and today to go look at it and he has not called me back. So I guess I will keep the money pit until I get enough cash to buy a?

Maybe he isn't home right now, this happened to me one time when I was buying rims off a guy I couldn't get a hold of him for almost a week.

We all know what Jeep stands for too right guys? Not that I mind them:

Remember there are 4 o2 sensors. First 2 adjust gas mileage. Last 2 mean the converters are bad.

I found out why he is not calling me back. He re-listed it at a higher price with a different number. I guess he should have blacked out his plate before he did that. Oh well

Just

Still needs a good home so I guess I will give it to it for awhile.

Always thought that was a good one lol.

Anyway you could probably find other Mustang's from around that year or a little older for a similar price.

indeed lol

yea, the guy sounds like a scam artist.. probably best to just walk away from this one. Just keep looking, you'll find the one for you. I picked up my 95 in december for 800 bucks, guy originally wanted 2000, but we haggled a bit and I drove her home.
