4.2 swap.. question

Why will only 01-04 oil pans work and not 99-00??

I'm going to take a guess and say it's because their is more room for the bigger stroke that comes with the different crank.

The 99-04 3.8 all have same stroke.. yes 4.2s is different but doesn't answer the oil pan question but thanks

That's what I meant, the oil pans on the 01-04 might be bigger and the reason why they might only work with the 4.2 crank.

Hmmm.. maybe but yet dont see why they would be.. unless the difference between internally and externally balance has something to cause change..

Everything i know about the 3.8 engine, the only difference between the 99-00 and 01-04 is the fact that ford changed teh connecting rods, changing the displacement from 3.8 to 3.9. other than the connecting rods the entire lower end is the exact same block. infact it i the same block from 96-04. So unless they made a change in the oil pan itself (which i've been trying to find out if they have) then there is no reason why you wouldn't be able to use the oil pan of of ANY Ford Essex 3.8 motor. I'll let you know if I see anything otherwise (because I've been looking into doing the same swap)

99-00 is externally balanced.. 01-04 is internally balanced and correct on the other thank please keep me posted

Then by that, you would think that the 99-00 would fit as well, because it would require more room would it not?

A lot of people have made mistakes on the swap. The post has all the correct answers so you can learn from someone mistakes. Believe me I have read a lot of mistakes over the years and made a few myself. A internal clearance issue with the girdle and taller mains is the problem.

99-00 are balanced by the flywheel and of set harmonic balancer .. crank the same

I re-used my old oil pan when I swapped a 4.2 in to my 1995 mustang. I had to swap a little more since mine was a single port 3.8
I got a whole 4.2 engine though. Then I just put my old heads and intake on it.

So you converted a split port 4.2 to a single port 4.2.. interesting.. you still used you 95 3.8 oil pan?? What year 4.2 engine was it

it was a 1997 4.2, It's wasn't a hard swap, the blocks are the exact same thing. All I did was use the 1995 3.8 heads on a 1997 4.2 block. They bolted right on there.
I didn't want to go through the trouble of finding a 99-04 v6 parts car then putting them in my 95. I noticed a huge difference after the swap though. I'm also using the stock 4.2 cam, made the exhaust rumble a LITTLE bit at idle.

Yeah i know bolt up and makes since but split port give you like 50 more horsepower.. my 4.2 is out a 06 f150.. got to change all the same stuff
