Just starting need help

Ok I have a 2001 V6 and I love it! im not going to get a V8.

There are some performance things i would like to do. but honestly i dont really know where to start. I have a Cold Air Intake On it and Dual Exhaust(FlowMasters) but that is it.

i hear headers are something good to get. same with superchargers, twin turbos, 3.73 gears....i mean i hear these things but i dont knwo where to start or what to get. but i definitely want a better performing car.

so any idea on where to start?

Re: Just starting need help

if you have the money, gears are definitely a noticable difference.

if you dont enough disposable cash right now, there are cheaper, less noticable mods you can start with.

Re: Just starting need help

Im persoanally a fan of the 410's in the automatics but I prefer 373s in the 5spd cars. I would do some checking into local speed shops that specialze in drivetrain mods/repairs or find a reputable Mustang shop locally.

Re: Just starting need help

on my 01 v6 manual I had exhaust (custom 2.25 inch stainless steel true dual catback), mac cai, asp under drives, and 3.73 gears. Overall it helped a ton, just needed to get it tuned and maybe ported/polished upper/lower and I would have been around 14.7 in the quarter.

Re: Just starting need help

what is your final goal? if you want it to make alot of power, start looking at forced induction but the gears are a good thing to have either way.with that commute id go 3.73 although im a 4.10 fan myself there is a thread on this site where i gave the mph per rpm for an auto v6 at 70mph, ill try to find it and link it here.

Re: Just starting need help

I wouldn't worry about headers until you really start adding some serious hp. The stock ones are fine for basic mods, unless you want them for show, but the gain is minimal before any power adder or serious power.

Also, get a 7.5inch traction lok to go with the gears. It'll give you power to both wheels and combined with gears will really improve acceleration.
Might as well do it at the same time and save on install costs.

I have a friend who installed 4.10s on his auto(02) and he said he noticed maybe a loss of 1-2mpg max. He said the taller gears were definitely worth it.

i would get a pulley to go with it. thatll add mpg and probably almost make up the difference. 4.10s are definately worth it. i get people all the time asking whether my car is a 6 or an 8. i keep up with a lot of cars now that i wouldve had no shot at before. as far as highway driving goes, i used to drive 140 miles or so every weekend from baton rouge to new orleans. id keep it at 65mph the whole way even though the speed limit was 70. i got around 22-24mph. the only part that sucked was watching everyone pass me up on the left. if you can drive a little slower, you wont even notice it. in my opinion, 4.10s all the way.

Re: Just starting need help

A traction lok, aka lsd (limited slip), or posi - in GM terms, will give you power to both wheels. Right now you have an open differential, which only allows you to have power to the right rear wheel. If you burnout, you will only leave one mark.

After a traction lok, you will leave two nice black marks.
One can be had for around 150-200 bucks new. I wouldn't get a used one.

Re: Just starting need help

oh **** i didnt know that at all...i thought i had power to both wheels...ok...i definitely need that...thats a must....now i just need to decide on the gears...if im running 4.10 doesnt that put more strain on my engine when im just driving? im thinking 3.73's would be better since im not really taking it to the track or anything. so 3.73's along with traction lok, and an under pulley that should make a pretty big difference in my c ar right?

Re: Just starting need help

ALRIGHT......

found the Traction-Lok differential and 3.73 gears i want. i work for ford and talked to the service manager...and they will install them however he said..

"THEY ARE LOUD AND MOST PPL WANT THEM TAKEN OUT AFTER GETTING THEM ARE YOU SURE YOU WANT THEM?"

so just wondering...are they really that much louder that its bad? just wondering? whats your take on it?

Re: Just starting need help

Never heard of that. Have heard that if the gears don't mesh right, they produce a really loud whining sound. Then they need to be crushed down to get rid of the whining.

Only thing I've heard of, maybe someone else with experience with them could add to it.

Re: Just starting need help

They are loud if they are installed wrong...lol...happend to my neighboor...got a nasty grinding sound. He did lowball on the install though...just make sure you get a good shop to do them.
