IMO it depends on the car. The v6 was the primarily not being mean but grocery getter car for the casual drivers. The v8s were for the power. They have the option of casual vs high performance and most of the time a middle car for in betweeners like in 99 they had the casual v6 the mid gt and high performance cobra. If the mustang was only v6 than the performance would be better. Like my 350z only comes v6 and it packs a decent amount of hp. IMO cause its the only engine opt for my brand.

Mustangs from day one came with a 6-cyl and a V8. The 6s were for people who either couldn't afford a V8 or simply wanted to say they owned a Mustang. Until the 4.0 (which was actually a sparked up Explorer motor) Ford didn't give a second thought to the 6ers. Those had a bit of power compared to the 3.8s, but they finally drove it home with the 3.7s in 2011. I'll be glad when they double eco-boost them ala the F150.

So true! The V6 mustang has grown leaps and bounds starting in 2011 from the old V6 days of the mustang.

Did no one ever make any cams other tham OEM for them? Maybe a good machine shop could grind one for you. Then you could shave the heads and who knows what? ...or you could get rid of it and just buy a V8. Sorry...

Honestly, I had a v6 until last week and I decided to get a gt. I never knew the difference until I drive the gt of what power that thing has. To be honest, people waste too much money into sixers for not enough gain IMO. The v8 engine is capable of so much more.

i can agree to a point...i sold my '04 GT for my v6...had the power i do miss from time to time, but compared to my sixxer driving how i like i'd keep what i have now. tossing that heavy v8 around the corners vs my setup now is night and day. now if i was driving lots of highways like i use to i'd of kept my GT, but for the mountain passes modded v6 all the way

glad you like the new GT though...the 99-04 GTs were decent even for a 2v

V6 is a cheaper economy engine, These engines to have more displacement than most imports V6's(which are mostly 2.5-3.5 liters). A 3.8-4.2 V6 could make a lot of power if it had more aftermarket support(forged internals, better heads and intakes), Most of the parts we use for performance are just ripped off of something else and thrown onto are V6's, like M90, M112 swaps, 4.2 swaps, windstar swaps.

Oh yea for sure the weight difference is completely noticeable. Believe me I loved my v6, that thing never let me down one bit. But for me, being as these mustangs are my daily driver for right now, I love the fact of having a v8. I haven't noticed too much of a gas mileage difference but then again I did like to hammer my sixxer lol. I really baby my gt

You won't notice a difference in mpg until you hammer it...that's one thing I liked about my GT it was only a few mpg less then any of the v6's I've owned.

The obvious reason would be that it is a V6, not a GT with a V8 engine.

The fact that almost all V6 pony power cars can perform as well or better than V8 cars from as little as ten years ago is amazing. I used to drool over the mid 90s Camaros that had 275HP V8s; now the 2012 V6 Camaro has 323HP. But, I'm sticking to my roots and being a Mustang man.

Simple ford didn't want the little six cylinder to be able to keep up with their GT models much less beat them.

The 3.8 has potential it's just nobody produces a lot of aftermarket parts for them
