Need help

Okay so my car was skipping *sometimes* and I tried taking the plug wires off and back on, because I replaced a sparkplug about a month ago because it was misfiring on a cylinder. So after I did that, it does alright. But it had/has rough idle and sometimes will jerk a tiny bit while driving. So I tried taking the wires off and back on and the service engine soon light came on. Any ideas why? I reset it and the light is still on. I also want to know why it will lurch/skip sometimes while driving

Crossed some wires maybe? Recheck the routing on your coil pack and make sure you plug the wires in the corresponding cylinder

No clue, don't have a tuner. In the morning before school I'm gonna unplug a wire one by one and see if any aren't plugged in good (its hot right now) and if that doesn't fix it ill stop by autozone and see what they can tell me

Okay so when I took out the airbox, apparently that's what threw the code. I reset the computer again and the CEL went off. But the question still stands, what could make my idle rougher and make it skip/jerk/lurch sometimes. It might do it about every 10 minutes if that helps. It's not like a whiplash kind of jerk just like the power cuts out for a split second or something along those lines

Try replacing the coil pack. My car was also misfiring and jerking, replaced that and problem went away

Is there a way to check if mine is bad? By the way, I don't know if this helps, but I did the trick where you take a wire off of the coilpack at a time to see if a plug is broke or whatever, to hunt it down. All of them shook the engine about the same amount except 1 or 2 did more than the others. And the new plug was like the others so its not that they are in better shape or anything

Could also be Crankshaft position sensor, Spark plug wires, or a sparkplug. Check/replace all that and it should stop.

Where and what is a crankshaft position sensor haha? I got all new plugs that I'm putting on tomorrow but I'm not sure that's the problem. And how would I check the wires? None are melted or anything

Crankshaft position sensor is located on the passenger side of the crankshaft (the round wheel looking thing in the middle of your engine) it should look like this:

Now to check the wires open the hood at night, turn all lights off and run the car, if the wires are bad you should see electricity arcs.

And the wires are fine then, I don't see arcs at night

There's really no way to check the CPS, but if it is not working the car should get CEL and throw a code that will say Missfire Detected Cylinder #. I replaced mine with a new one and that didn't fix my problem, but while searching for a thread that would fix my problem I found many people that said replacing the CPS fixed their problem. In the mean time do the spark plugs and check the coil pack, those are the most likely ones to be causeing the hesitation

Okay thanks a ton! I'm getting my coil pack checked by autozone tomorrow and I'll change the sparkplugs either way. They are the stock ones with 115k on them haha

All right! Let me know how it goes, make sure to get Motorcraft sparkplugs ONLY, the stories I've heard of other brands in our cars are not pretty

That side wasn't bad but the passenger side with the egr tube (i think that's what its called) was in the way on the back two. I think if it was gonna take me 3 hours id pay someone to do it lol

It usually takes about 15 minutes to get it jerking. Plus I didn't drive it, just cranked it because I got finished at 9:30 and needed a shower and I was dead tired haha. I'll let you know when I take her for a drive
