The gauge is not messed up, it's just never been accurate since it rolled out of the factory none are.. Yesterday I drove 80 miles before it left F so..

I have posted about this before, but it has been a year or so. I'll go over it again.

My car got 14 city / 24 hwy when I bought it.

After I installed the following:
Windstar Upper Kit that also included a CAI and 65mm TB,
An SCT / BAMA tuner (Maximum economy achieved at 91 octane Performance tune)
Pacesetter Shorty Headers
Mandrel Exhaust System X-pipe with high flow cats
Flowmaster American Thunder catback
ASP 25% underdrive pulley

I get 22-24 city
I get 36-37 mpg at 55 mph when I am in Minnesota on the back roads
I get 30-33 mpg at 65 mph when I am on South Dakota back roads
I get 28-30 mpg at 75 on the interstate
I have never checked my mpg when I am out in the middle of nowhere going 100+ mph for an extended period of time....... Because that is done with E30 on Race tune and EVERYONE knows that ethanol kills MPG!

I want to be perfectly clear when I say that I am not offended by anyone doubting my claimed fuel economy. I have been called a liar right to my face by friends and co-workers... repeatedly... at least until that person goes with me on a road trip somewhere. There is always a bet with money involved and it's just fine with me because I always get paid. You don't have to believe that either. It's like the phrase "Show me the video or it didn't happen". I can't. Even if I shot a video... one pause and it's worthless.

So anyway, regarding my unbelievable fuel economy, all I am going to say is that:
a) This Mustang has been my "MPG science project" since the day I bought it.
b) Every mod has been carefully selected with increased fuel economy in mind.
c) I'm almost 50 and drive my car very gently because I want the MPG (unless I am on 93 octane race tune, then it's play time)!
d) I don't speed. Period. I don't slam the accelerator to the floor just to hear my pipes, i don't smoke the tires, and I don't wait until 6k to shift.
e) I am a very boring driver.
f) Proper maintenance is important. Clean fuel, clean spark, clean oil, clean air filter, and proper inflation do wonders.
g) 93 Race tune eats fuel like my 2003 Hemi Ram truck. 87 octane tune doesn't deliver but 91 octane tune really kicks ***!
h) I should have been more clear about the figures. Those are best case results. They are not averages, but they have been repeated on many occasions. They are not what I get EVERY DAY.

Sometimes when I need fuel I am forced to buy gas blended with ethanol because that is all they sell in that town. Mpg goes out the window instantly as soon as I add ethanol.

I have really bad days too... I have gotten as low as 28 going 55 mph in Minnesota, gotten as low as 26 on the 65 mph roads and as low as 23 on the interstate, even after all of the mods. High wind and poor quality gasoline contribute greatly to the decline in economy. This is South Dakota! We consider it a calm day if the wind is only blowing 20 mph.

I suppose the way I drive has quite a bit to do with it, but I am being honest about the figures I posted. Every mod helped (Windstar and Bama tuner were worth 4 mpg EACH). You can go back through my previous posts/threads and see that I have been discussing my MPG science project for a while now. I posted how much of a gain each mod netted as well as asked a ton of questions regarding cams, head work, and anything else anyone could think of that I could do to further increase my mileage. I even discussed going to a higher gear ratio like maybe a 3.08 or even a 2.73. I want more....

I forgot to mention in the list of stuff that I also have a Screamin Demon coil and some kind of spark plug wires and spark plugs from American Muscle that came highly recommended. I honestly have no idea if this made a difference or not...

(don't top off, let it click then be done... or you will get inaccurate readings).

This was with my 01 Bullit, all were city miles except for the 17mpg one, that one i filled up then did about 80 miles highway and then filled up again.
What's the name of that app?

I have a 97 v6, with a 98 3.8L I know I have problems (I.e eepv sensor was pulled to pass emissions) and I need a new coil pack) I have true duals and a CAI and I get sh**y mileage around town, I'd guess maybe 10mpg on a good day can't tell for sure cause I still have to replace gear for odometer to work lol. But I moved about ~ 450 miles and made it on just over a full tank. I was so shocked I popped to hood just to see if someone swapped out my engine at the gas station lol. 70 mph at ~1.9k rpm with an overloaded car full of all my things I expected at least 3 fill ups

You might have higher gears or engine just works a little harder.

You probably have the same gears as me. I'm 2000 right at around 67-68. Your engine should be fine. More weight should mean higher rpms, usually.

The cars have a locking converter, rpm per speed should only change with gear swaps, otherwise your converter is failing to hold.

+1 no matter how much weight the rpms will stay the same... On the other hand the engine will be working harder at the same rpms if you have extra weight in the car, that can cause a decrease in mpg.
