how can I tell the difference between a 7.5" and a 8.8" rear end

Check the tag on the rear cover

+1 Also the 99-04 V6 came with 7.5 stock, the GTs came with 8.8. So if you think its stock the it will be a 7.5.

All 94-04 v6 came with 7.5 and all GTs came with 8.8
