Maybe a previous owner cut a wire coz it was always on? Do u have aftermarket exhaust or tune? Could also be a burned out bulb, or removed bulb.

A good way to see if it works is to unplug a spark plug wire while running and see if it comes on, it should throw a miss-fire code. Unplugging the MAF would work but might not come on right away. U could unplug the Idle Air Control then start the car and the light would be on if it were working at all. U could unplug the crankshaft position sensor then when you try to start it, the light would come on if it were working. If any or any combination of those dont work, you should check the bulb then wiring.

You shouldn't have to unplug anything for the light to come on with the first turn of the key lol (assuming service light means check engine light OP)

The bulb is most likely blown out and is easily replaced, take off the gauge cluster trim and undo the bolts holding in the cluster itself. Once you pull it out locate which little light it is and pull it out, it just twist out of place.

Yes u are right, that just to make sure, there is another reason that it doesnt come on. I was helping a friend work on his explorer and he cel didnt come on when you turned the key but it did work. I dont remember what the problem was right off though.

So I disconnected the battery and when I connected it back the service light went away. But a week later it turned on again.

Yep.. It resets the computer for a little while doing that, the fact it reoccurred means you have a problem that needs fixed..

Or if you had it repaired a while back maybe you need to use programer or scanner to clear the code. Ask Autozone to check for codes. No codes then ask them if they can clear it with their scanner.
