I thought about it, but damn they're over 3.5k. I rather make it look pretty putting that kind of money into it.

Yeah I'm going with appearance. Don't really get the point of sinking money into it that barely anything comes of it

you can get a 4.2 engine for $300 and up depending on the condition, it doesn't give you much HP, but you'll feel the torque.
And with a tuner, 8.8 and some lower rear-end gears, there should be a pretty noticeable difference...
I have a 8.8 with I think 3.27's? not much of a difference from the 2.73's i had before but since it's a locking differential, I never spin the tires anymore... it just grabs and goes.

Id say get gears and be done with it. It will feel a lot faster (depending on your current gears), but you won't get any more horsepower out of it

If barely anything comes of it you didn't do something right.. Stock motor with 11 psi procharger and exhaust can make 140rwhp more than stock, that's a 90% gain in power (taking the stock 155ish to 300rwhp)

And used kits are floating around for less than 2K often

4.2 swap is not pointless. You just have to replace some engine components and you'll have a 4.2 V6 couple that with a windstar intake and you'll be the quickest sixxer in your town

It uses the exact same block, buy a cheap 4.2, buy new bearings, gaskets and rings. Use your heads and intake.
Or buy the 4.2 internals and use your old block. Whatever you thinks best.
The 4.2 cam is suppose to be the best of all the STOCK cams. Which is a little bonus if you buy a 4.2.
Since yours is a NE 3.8, it has exhaust manifolds. You already said you like your exhaust, but a set of 1994-98 3.8 short tube headers could be pulled for about $50, give you a little more power and I don't think they change the exhaust sound. Headers are also more durable and look a A LOT better than manifolds.

Another 94-98 came STOCK with headers so its an OEM part that fits directly on your engine. They're not flashy or shiny or anything. That's what gives away headers they look just like your exhaust manifolds. Smog techs are not geniuses (hope I didn't offend anyone) nor will they go out of their way to check if your car is completely stock. If it looks stock they'll pass visual and that's that
