4.2 swap build list

Alright I've got a 1996 six banger and it's got 226xxx on it. I just bought a truck for winter and I'm out of high school in a lil over a month. So my plan is to pull the ole tired out 3.8 out and put a nice 4.2 back in. Who knows what all I need I keeping with the single port but I need a build list can someone help me out?

4.2 crank, 4.2 pistons, 4.2 harmonic balancer. If you get the harmonic balancer from a 97-98 you can reuse your crank pully.

That's my question too. After the first of the year, I'm gonna start collecting parts for this myself

01-04 oil pan and pick up tube, there is a complete swap listed for each year model of car and a parts list of what you need at the top of this section.

Aren't you the one who cut the main studs in the fb group to make the pan clear the 4.2 mains?

No. I didn't cut anything. I used everything from my stock 3.8 block.

It doesn't include that a tune is needed. I guess, it is expected knowledge.

Correct get the SCT tuner from Bama, but any mod after the 4.2 swap that needs a tune will most likely need a dyno tune unless Bama can modify the stock 4.2l dyno tune to let's say you add LTs, to accommodate for that

I can get you a tune for the build

Luis tuned mine via email and outdone my dyno tune in both track times and mileage lol..

Edit: if you have it tuned by one person another tuner can not modify their file! You would have to get the actual tune file not the .cef that is loaded to the tuner (in reply to the last post)

Sweet I'll definitely be getting ahold of you for that tune David and a regrind then. Can I run stock lifters with that cam though? I wanna change rockers to something a lil bigger, if I'm not mistaken stock rockers are 1.73s correct?

The car will run without a tune, but you will wish you never cranked it.

It depends of the cam. If you want performance, get a cam that needs rockers. I bought rockers, springs and lifters. Building a engine will nickel and dime you. Take your time and ask yourself, "do I want to do it right the first time". If not you will find your self going back into the engine and finishing what you started. But, you can get a good mid. performance cam without breaking the bank.
I herd certain cams with big valve lift need the heads to be port n polished. If not the exhaust gasses can not escape and will cause the oil pan to crack.
Here are the most common cam options. LOL have fun deciding

rpm-mustang cam spec
207/215 .493/.495 110LCA 112ICL

207/209 .493/.491 110LCA-- budget cam swap with moderate flowing exhaust
207/215 .505/.495 110/2LCA-- budget cam swap with restrictive exhaust
216/224 .507/.519 112LCA- aggressive 4.2L cam with heads, intakes, etc
215/225 .495/.491 112LCA- mild singleport 3.8L poweradder cam
220/225 .538/.521 110LCA- aggressive singleport 3.8L cam
224/228 .519/.514 110LCA - aggressive singleport 4.2L cam

Depends how worn they are, generally if you have 100K or more it's a good idea to go ahead and replace them (cool thing is you can use the lifters out of a 302!)

I'm using these in my car
Ford Racing Hydraulic Mustang Roller Lifter Kit - 5.0/5.8 M-6500-R302 (86-95 5.0L) - Free Shipping M-6500-R302

Yes stock is 1.73, harland sharp makes some 1.8's which with a regrind cam would work to your advantage since I can't have to large of an amount ground off it. Would get you another couple hundredths lift or so lol

As far as I know they don't sit any taller than other rockers, that would be a good question to call and ask about

Yes, you'll need to purchase a pushrod length checker to measure which length pushrod is needed for the cam

how would I get the tune flashed into the computer? And is it just a base tune or something else?

With the handheld it connects to the obd2 port under dash a few simple steps and it'll flash the car. The first tune is a base yes, then you datalog that so we can see what changes need to be made, he modifies then sends new tune via email. Datalog again with the new tune and see how it runs and if it requires further modification.

So I could just buy something like the bama hand held tuner then and tune it that way?
