8.8 Rear end swap.

I'm really sorry guys I'm sure this has been asked plenty of times but everywhere I look its a different answer.

I have a 1998 V6, can I swap just the 8.8 differential into my axle housing? Or do I need to buy the whole GT housing?

If I can do the swap my axle shafts are 28 spline correct?

Just differentials are only a couple hundred bucks used and I can have shipped to me along with the gears I want, and none of the salvage yards close to me have one and I'd hate to pay freight on an entire axle housing.

You need the whole 8.8 rearend, bolts in with no modifications...
a 94-04 rearend would work, I use a 2001 GT rear end under my 1995 V6. I think it's about half and inch wider? everything still bolted up with no problems though.
It'll be hard to find one with the gears you want, I don't know about 94-98 GT's but the 2001 I got had 3.27's stock, better than the stock 2.73's.

Now by whole rear end your talking the axle housing correct? From wheel to wheel with axle shafts and all?

And I'm not worried about the gear ratio, I will just buy a set of my choosing from Summit racing, they are only like $200 and then I can pick exactly what I want. Hell I'll probably buy 2 sets so I can maintain decent mileage and switch to the go fast gears when I want to.

The entire housing is different.

Also, gears are not just a bolt and go thing, they must be setup correctly with shims and spacers to prevent noise and wear.

94 forward is the 31 spine axle and it is about 30% stronger than the previous 28 spine axle. We have v-6s so the extra spines will not matter. Pre 94 8.8s fit just shorter

Ok, but for the record I'm doing the V8 swap next winter, I bought the car wrecked so I'm just going to get it road ready for this summer then build my engine for it this summer to put in next winter. Along with the 8.8 and everything else I'm getting. I'm just going to head out to a salvage yard and find a couple GT's and start yanking parts off.

Pre-94's are also 4 lugs though. Would have to convert to 5 look lug.

Yea, you have to go to a 5 lug axle and the axle bearing should be changed due to the age. I personally would not go any deeper because rear end rebuilds are for the pros. A engine is easy but rear ends are a whole new story. It's like doing surgery and everything must be perfect.

Nope. All 94-04 GT 8.8's are 28 spline. You'll need a 94-98 Cobra, 01 Bullitt or 03/04 Mach rear for 31 spline axles.

You would be correct. A buddy of mine switched his stock 28 spline axles to a brand new set of 31 spline axles on his 01 GT, so yeah 94-04 have 28 stock.

I read the article a long time ago and personally do not have any experence with the 8.8.
It wont be the first time a magazine got something wrong.

I think it would depend how many miles are on it.

Is the drive axel the same length as the 7.5 rear?

How big of a difference will I feel with the limited slip differential and 3.73 gears?

People who get 373 always wish they got 410s. search it in the v-8 section.

4.10 are bad ***! Anything lower and you'll be cheating yourself.

I don't have a v6 by I'm almost certain a gear change is like waaayyyy more fun on a v6 than a v8

This video should give you a pretty good idea of how a new edge v6 with 4.10s will spin

Fwiw, my gt spins around 2.5k @ 65. But its an auto. 5 speeds rev lower because they have that extra gear

Oooh I see. Get the 3.73. That's the gear you get when MPG comes into play. But from what I've read its not THAT much of a difference.

As far as the actual swap, I can't help you there because idk. Sorry friend
