Just ask, it is common knowledge because the questions have been asked soooooooooooooooooooooooooooo many times. IT'S JUST A STROKED 3.8 with +5 hp. and 15 tq. You also need a tune

The 4.2 is just a stroked 3.8 so externally it is the same. The transmission will mount because the engine has the same bolt holes as the 3.8.

The price depends on your shopping places. The heads will work, but the bottom of the engine is different. You would need a new crank, rods, and pistons. Most people get a junk yard engine to save the money that the rods and crank will cost. I herd somewhere you can not put 4.2 internals in a 3.8 but am not personally sure.
It will crank without a tune and you will wish you never cranked the engine because it will run like crap. David sells tunes for the 4.2. AM does not.

Ok so if I get a junkyard engine out of a wrecked f150 just clean it up and everything should bolt up fine? And any idea on how much his tunes are?

Do you have a tuner?

pm davidcseifert he will give you a estimate. You should do some port n polish work to the heads and intake to get a decent amount of hp. gain.

Not unless you are getting it ported and polished. If you are paying a mechanic to rebuild the engine I can tell you where to get the cheapest 4.2 that is ported and polished.

It will run without a tune, mine runs a little lean. I've been driving it for more than year. If I had a tuner and egr tube I'd be pretty happy though.
