Alfredo

When I pull in and shift into neutral, the revs stay at around 1300 for quite a long time, then slowly drop down to idle at about 900.

It is also noticeable when decelerating - it doesn't seem to lose speed as quickly as it should at first.

It is a 2000 Mustang V6 3.8 manual .

Is this normal, advice appreciated.

Many thanks.

This is the gt section. I'm guessing your car is stick. When I'm driving, if I shift to neutral my rpms do not drop to below 1k until I am almost at a complete stop and they hang around 1.1-.2k. 1.3k may be just slightly high but ur also in a v6 so idk. Maybe check ur iac. But in general for ur rpms to hang just slightly and then drop to idle is normal

The RPMs hang to an extent when you are coasting in order to provide an adequate amount of vacuum for the Hydro-boost system to operate. Now when you say they slowly come down, how long does that take? Are you sitting still for a decent amount of time before it drops to idle?

If I pull into a service area and stop, the revs will remain at 1300 for say 20 seconds then take maybe 5 seconds to fall to idle speed.

Have you cleaned your throttle body or idle air control valve lately. The could be dirty. Or your maf sensor
