4.2/3.8 interchange parts

I was wondering do the 3.8 and 4.2 use the same pistons or rods? I know they use the same block and different crank shafts but I'm not sure if the rods or pistons are the same. Can someone clear this up for me?

Cam is different too! The only difference is the longer stroke

You will gain 15hp and 45 tq if you use the right intake

This article says that the two motors use the same connecting rods though

You are right. The top article messed me up a while ago. Taylor corrects every ones mistakes. Good catch mummert.

98 3.8 stroked to 4.2 - V6Power Messageboard
You can put larger rods in it. SSMS has the right size 351 rods.

So does anyone know if the supercoupes use the same length rod as a normal 3.8/4.2?

I finally read this article all the way through. Good 411. I was thinking about a stroker, getting some pi heads next month and the 3.8 gains are not big. Great to know you can use the F-150 harmonic balancer and flywheel.
"Ofria sanded on both ends of the connecting rods to equalize their weights".
I know the flywheel, crank pulley, and crank are effect by internally and externally balanced engines. I have a feeling the rods are effected too. I have never worked at a machine shop and can not say 100% sure either way.
I would recommend bringing the rods to a machine shop or ordering new ones.

The camshaft is different, it still interchanges though. I used it in mine since I read it was better than the 3.8 can.

I think its less. I don't think anyone's taking these cams to the dyno to verify.

97-04 4.2L
185/194 .443/.445 112LCA 110ICL

99-03 3.8L XR3Z-6250-CA
178/194 .427/.446 116LCA 111ICL
Some one reported it from another sight. I do not remember who. The same guy tried to speck his cam and was way off. I do see minor gains on the intake side. But not sure exactly how much. Like you said Lemons its not worth dynoing.
Either way I would not put a factory cam in a 4.2. A comp cam either way.
204/216 .480/.480 115LCA 108ICL 259HR115 44-701-9 89-PRESENT
If you want hight tq numbers. This cam will work without rockers, but needs big springs.
or a
207/215 .500/.500 109-112 LSA
IF YOU WANT HIGH HP NUMBERS.
With bv heads I would say 60 hp

Stock 4.2 cam is only slightly more aggressive worth a few hp and the lsa change makes the idle a little more "lumpy"
