Correct speedometer gear...

I have a 97' 3.8 with 4.10's and 275/45/17 in the rear. My speedometer is about 20 mph off. I was told that I could correct the the speedometer with a new gear. Does anybody know what color gear I need to get my speedo back to within reason? Does this gear go in the tranny or in the gauge cluster?

Re: Correct speedometer gear...

use the red one , you can get it from your local ford dealership for about 10$ and it shouldnt take more then 15 - 20 minutes to swap out.

Re: Correct speedometer gear...

you cant get it 100% accurate with just a speedo gear, you have to swap the one on the transmission as well. The other option is a dallas speedcal unit.

Re: Correct speedometer gear...

Steeda says use the white gear, So I put one in and my speedo is still about 7 mph off. Way better than the stock yellow gear but I was under the impression it would be a bit closer. Is there any way to get a more precise reading? I used a tune on my 02 GT to correct my speedo, will a tune help a 97 or will I just have to live with it?
