Best year for 4.2 swap?

Alright I just got my truck on the road and the stangs build can finally begin. What would be the best year f150 to get a 4.2 motor out of to swap into my 96? I'm keeping the single port setup and a friend is gonna build me a custom intake and port my heads.

I think it's 99 or newer? They made them all the way up to 2008, so it should be pretty easy to find one.

They're all the same, just find one with low miles. Custom intake setup like? Don't put a boxed upper unless boosted! Throw in a cam while you're at it though

I thought the early 4.2 had a different stud girdle that hits the 3.8 oil pan?

He's making me an intake similar to the stock manifold but were just gonna make it out of box tubing because te stock are such a pain to port. It's pretty much gonna be like an edlebrock intake but for a v6 and using a GT TB. And yea I on buying a regrind from you David

Long as you use 01-04 3.8 pan there are no clearance issues.

So basically a short runner style of a stock intake?

Sounds good!

That 6 shooter dude was wrong. You can just put 4.2 rods, pistons, and crank in your 3.8. I e-mailed a guy who makes 4.3s out of 3.8s

My e-mail said the bore is the same. I double checked it comparing Autozone piston rings for the 4.2 and 3.8. If you add 25,50, or 75 mm it would be the same add on either engine.

Same bore, because they have the same block. Just different crank and connecting rods, also the balancing equipment.

Rods are the same for 3.8 & 4.2, pistons and crank are not.
