Maybe with some custom work. just like its possible to put an evo engine in a stang. just depends on if you have the time and money to do it.

I have the time but don't really have the money so I can't just pull mine and drop the one from an 01 in?

Same bolt pattern, it'll bolt up. Might need to get an 99-04 crossmember. I don't know of the electronics will work though.

Here is what I found. If you do not fix this your speedometer will not work.

Same transmissions 4r70w but you wont have a speedometer connection for the 01. Your 98 has a different tailshaft connection.

Price is right for sure, provided it functions properly, and you can adapt it in.

Tailshaft isn't hard to change. For most folks I'd say it's doable.

You cant change the tailshaft on those transmissions. if your in a bind for a transmission look into the one on craigslist for short term. You can have your 98 trans rebuilt and reinstall it later.

98 was the 1st year for the 4r70w. The 4.6 has one but the bolt pattern is different than the 3.8. The 96-97 3.8 trans will work just not as good of a trans compared to the 98

I had this same question on my truck a while back with the speedo. I could have changed the tailshaft but the output shaft on the transmission didn't have the gear on it so it STILL wouldn't have worked.
Id make for damn sure that the later model transmissions still have the speedometer gear on the output shaft otherwise that has to be changed as well.
And that requires a complete disassembly of the transmission...

Not that I'm aware of. But technology is always changing. Maybe there is.

I think that it will be easier to find the correct transmission.
