Over drive

So this may or may not be a dumb question but I have a 99 v6 automatic, and when you turn her on it's automatically in over drive. But then I was told to click the button on the shifter to turn the OD off, so which is it? Drive with over drive on or off?

If you go above 40mph overdrive must be on or else you'll wear the hell outta your engine and you'll get awful mpg.

pypes x w/flow 40's, SR CAI, plasti dipped (emblems, stripe, rear decklid, rear valance, cowl vent grille, fuel door, antenna holder), shorty antenna, mach 1 chin spoiler, custom interior trim, blue LED interior lights, more to come later

Overdrive is automatically on when the car is turned on, it is technically your 4th gear. If you press the O/D button it turns it off, so you'll run on 3 gears.
