I know it's 97-04. I think it's 97-06. Just go into a junk yard and tell them you have a 04 4.2 F-150 and need a engine. They will know all compatible engines. We use to have a write up on this subject, but it got ruined by the moderators.

Do you know what is necessary to do the conversion?

There is a sticky for the swap at the top of the section listing everything you need for the swap etc etc. 97-08 doesn't matter all 4.2 short blocks bolt up the same.

What if its a front wheel drive 4.2? I was talking to a guy and he says he has a front wheel drive 4.2. What would I need to make that compatable, if it is?

RWD blocks only, I didn't specify before since we were just talking about F150's.

Okay, thanks. Would you have any pointers on where to look and a fair price on one?

The best place to get one is your local junk yard. Mine is $650 with a 90 day warranty.

if its a FWD 4.2, it means he swapped the 4.2 internals into a 3.8 fwd block.

I cant find the forum on the app. So sorry in advance if this question is answered in the write-up, but how would I go about getting it tuned? If I buy a tuner from bama would they make a tune for it? I know it sounds stupid but id rather ask and be wrong than not ask

I wouldn't trust bama.. They're a CAI and exhaust type of tune lmao even then it's hit and miss.

Ford made different 3.8 blocks, The FWD drive block is a completely different block. The mount location on the block was moved, and the bell housing is different.
