Changing the stock shifter on an automatic

I was looking into gettin a nice boot and a new shifter for my automatic. I don't care about the over drive button since I literally have never turned it off before. I'm just wondering if the aftermarket shifter I get has to have a button on it in order to change gears? Does it have to have a button on it or can it just move freely up and down the prnd21

I'm quite sure it needs a button for the shifter to stay in place and not get moved around if someone accidentally hits it! I mean imagine this your driving and a friend in the other seat is doing something and accidentally moves the shifter to any other spot, that would be a little weird because it would stand in one place! But I've been looking for automatic shifters and can't really find much! If you find more please let me know cause I'm looking for one too!

So if I got one that didnt have a button I could still move it? Thats all that matters to me honestly. It is very hard to move the shifter by mistake in these mustangs, the shifter is so far away

Well I don't know about that, if you get a shifter without a button mean you might need to do some work the the system because it is made for that button to hold itself in place.

I don't know where the guy got the knob from but there's a video on YouTube about these shifter knobs for autos. They push down to shift and lock in the gear when u release it

I think if you go to autozone or advanced they have a couple knobs that work for an auto. I don't know how well

You'll want a knob that depresses in the center to engage the button that shifts from PDNR21.

I have the UPR Billet shifter on mine and it works pretty well. I did relocate my O/D button to a toggle switch in the bezel but it's not necessary.

What are you referring to? The shifter in my pic or what Cody was talking about?

Yes, that shifter ball is specifically for our 4R70W transmissions. I believe it was ~$20 when I got it 4 years ago.

I pulled the shifter boot off a junkyard 5spd car to clean up the bezel a bit.

Is your interior black? You could paint parts of your interior like a shiny chrome silver! And get silver floor mats or something

Something like that, I want to replace radio, shifter, and maybe seat covers, with that driver side handle with a hole, what color would work?

Dude... i have the same exact hole on my drivers side panel. Thats crazy.... Look at my picture and compare it to yours....

As for the color, since your interiors so light you could put paint your parts black, and black around the outiside of your car like wheels and stripes/tints so it could be a theme

But seriously that hole on both our cars is a bit insane...

You have the same interior as my v6...I'd either dye the light grey parts charcoal grey (the darker shade) and throw some billet throughout the cabin or leave the colors as is and add some billet accents - shifter ball/handle, hvac knobs, door handles, sills etc.

The shifter replacement is a must imo..fairly simple to do and not too expensive, and the results are great, as shown in our pics.

You can check out a junk yard for a replacement door insert or get a reproduction at Latemodel Restoration.

Dang! I just noticed that hole on ur pic and my car, that sooo weird!! And for paintbing black is you mean have everything black? What about the shifter, door handles etc.?

And for that second guy who posted, who would that look? In my mind I think it feel weird, I'm also planing on getting tints, and maybe some place strips on the exterior of the car!
