newb here. 96 3.8 auto

hey guys new to this forum and only owned my mustang for about 6 months now, finally got the feel of driving this thing down and learned all my old tricks in it so now its time to to start tweaking it cause it just isnt fast enough for me yet. so anyone got some easy pointers or advice on what can be done? nt looking to make a 600 hp 6 cyl cause im gonna do a v8 and 5spd swap at some point. but first off any tips on how to get those front 2 cats off with little to no fight? it already has i believe bbk shorties on it but shes sputtering and what not till she gets good and hot and plugs wires coils and fuel arent the issue so im gonna pull all 4 of the cats off and see how she runs then.

First do a tune up and how many miles details on the car can help us figure out your problem. You can make 600hp with a built engine and turbo but why spend the money when you want to swap to a v8 anyway just drive till you save up or till the engine dies

That's thing wrong with it niether the tach or the odometer work but im guessin somewhere around 150k already did plugs wires and coils its got a k&n air filter getting good fuel pressure. Threw a code a few weeks ago for the camshaft positin sensor so i got a new one and put it in but its still got a code for so im thinking its the cam sensor insert thats bad i did some reading on other forums and those go bad pretty commonly but i did get the cats off yesterday with alot less fight than i expected

Congrats on getting into a mustang. They sure are fun, low cost cars that with seemingly endless modification possibilities.

Bolt-ons will only net modest gains at best.

If you want some decent power gains I'd consider a split port swap from a 99-04 3.8L v6. The improved intake/head design and will bring you up to the 99-04 3.8 hp numbers ~ 193 vs your 145.

It's a great bang for your buck mod and will allow you to work on your car and learn a lot about it. A windstar intake upgrade will net and additional 8-10hp and won't take much more effort if you're already swapping to split port.

Below is a link with the full list of what's needed to complete the swap. Seems like a lot but most of it is covered if you come across a junk yard car.

You could also look into an m90 eaton from a thunderbird supercoupe. These have been known to make some decent power but do require some supporting mods to fuel, air and drivetrain.
