Transmission or something else?

Suggestions please... My car is a 99 V6 auto with 185k on it. Pretty high yeah, since I bought it I've done the various things, plugs, battery, wires etc. It's always kind of been sluggish under initial throttle and every so often would seem to shift hard but nothing crazy.

Two days ago the O/D light started to blink so I got worried, it was shifting pretty rough from 2nd down to 1st. I read online that sometimes the computer will get confused because of another problem and that unhooking the battery will sort things out. I did that yesterday and since then no light, and shifting fine again.

I've always thought my fuel filter was causing the sluggish start and have had a new one sitting in the box but haven't had the time to put it on yet, We are doing that Tuesday.

What are the chances that this could fix the issue, or do you guys think there is more to it?

When you say it's sluggish start.. I assume you're talking about your auto and how slow it is do get moving. Without a tune, the auto's are so slow. Hard shifts are signs that you're probably gonna need a rebuild soon. Has it popped out of gear yet? If you've done common maintenance, I'm sure it's something bigger.

Sluggish start I mean that you press the gas, the exhaust sounds terrible like a fuel issue or catalytic converter is clogged, like your take off is not smooth at all, it goes, stops, goes, stops, then finally takes off.
