Rear end clunk in 2000 V6

Hi, can anyone help please?
I have a 2000 Mustang V6 3.8 manual gearbox with 78K clocked.

On the open road when I put my foot back on the accelerator after taking it off there is a
noticeable 'clunk' which seems to be coming from the area under the back seat.
This is especially so in 5th gear, but it can be heard in all gears.
Also there is a constant 'whine' from the same area when on the move.

When I jack up the rear of the car I can move a rear wheel a couple of inches before the propeller shaft starts to move.

Is the most likely cause wear in the differential unit?
If so, which parts do I need to replace?
It is a bit difficult for me as I live in Spain so I have to order the parts from
the USA, have them shipped over the get a local garage to fit them.

Any advice will be appreciated.

Have you looked into u-joints. Maybe worth looking into.

No other man-made device since the shields and lances of ancient knights fulfills a man's ego like an automobile.

spare tire could just be banging around lol
if its a wine from your rear end, I would suggest going and having the fluid changed and at that time they will be able to inspect the gears.

^^ Agreed. I just had the same thing happen with my car. Turns out if was just leaking fluid out of a bad wheel bearing seal, but it could range from low fluid to a bad pinion/ring gear, bad spider gears, or a bad wheel bearing. Is it a constant whine, or is it only when you are on the gas? If its the latter, does the whine seem to go away when you press on the gas harder, or is it always the same volume?

look for a 99-04 GT in a salvage yard, wrecker etc...
