Sound system

I'm trying to decide where to put my sound system and I was thinking 2 12's in the trunk but don't know if them being in the trunk would disorient the sound at all or if it still sounds good. If anybody knows any better places that don't take up the whole back seat then I'd love to hear from you.

I second the 2 12s. I run my two 800 watt kicker compcvrs with a don't 1600 watt explode amp. Also you'll want to put in new door speakers and rear speakers. And a new head unit and bypass the factory amp as well. I've done all this except replace the rear speakers since I don't have the money yet. Gunna go with some 6x9 JBLs.

Promise you'll love you mustang a lot more with some killer sound with it.

That first guy that posted probably just likes jazz....

There are a myriad of different options. Do you want loud or do you want it to sound good? There's really not a mix of the two--you're either listening at normal speech volume and want it to sound perfect OR you want it louder than that. I can help direct you more when you tell me about your preference. What kind of budget do you have? Are you replacing your head unit? Regular speakers? How much fabricating are you comfortable doing?

I mean, I get it. Traditional audio setups weigh a lot. I probably added 200 lbs to my Charger with the subwoofer, enclosure, and all the dampener. But you can get one 20lb 15" sub and run it infinite baffle without a box at all. I know 20 lbs is 20 lbs but you'd almost definitely never notice the difference... Now if it was a track car with no AC, carpet, etc., I could obviously understand.

And at that point, why are you driving a new Mustang instead of something older where you get more performance for your money?

Right, so if it's a dedicated performance vehicle, I understand. I take it you also removed the A/C?

So my point is that you need some level of comfort in your car, otherwise you'd ditch your A/C (I've seen people much less competitive junk the A/C in their daily driver during the summer in Houston). So you would understand, at least on some level, how people might want some creature comforts in their car.

I mean you'd look at me weird if I told you that the A/C in your car belonged in a dumpster, but you just told this guy that aftermarket speakers have no place in his car.

Well I could care less about ac but there is absolutely no need to get rid of it in the first place. Even while it's on it cuts off at 100% throttle.

I work outside in the heat 100+ hours a week. In texas, so i could care less about heat

If you are going to do it, by all means do it right. Dynomat the crap out of the trunk etc, nothing sounds worse than pulling up next to a car and the whole trunk is rattling

Well I'm willing to spend as much as I have to but want to keep it as cheap as possible and I have a friend that knows all about installing and would help me with all the fabricating and I'll probably end up replacing all the speakers with upgraded ones so that I get an overall louder system that isn't just a car rattling bass machine with hardly any music to it.

Replace the head unit. I like the Pioneer 80PRS a lot. For speakers, Alpine Type X components may be your best bang for the buck. Don't worry about rear speakers. Get a 4 channel amp and run the components active if you do get the Pioneer because it can do time alignment for you. For sub, I would probably just get one 15" and seal it and call it a day due to the small trunk. SSA and Sundown have some of the greatest offerings right now. I'd probably get an SSA Icon and feed it a solid 1.25kw. For amps, Cadence makes some of the best bang for your buck, easily. Their ZRS series is great. I actually have two Massive Audio amps that have done well for me right now but they are pricier because of their small footprint. Make sure you do the big three.

Don't forget to deaden the doors and the trunk. Second skin's damplifier was the go-to several years ago. If you need any help, post up here. If you feel like this is too daunting, you can use the passive crossovers on the component speakers and get a 2ch amp and nobody would blame you. Going 3 way active may be a little ambitious for a first-timer, but it can be done with a head unit like the 80prs because it has a mic that tunes everything. It got really close to the correct crossover points.
