I've got the same issue...took it to a shop and they told me that I had a broken guide door in the air plenum behind the dash (or the cable that moves this door is broken). When this guide door breaks the car automatically goes to defrost. He quoted me $1000+ cause he would have to pull the dash to fix it. So I said screw it.

Maybe the door that opens to allow the a/c to go thru is broken. What I did for mine was pull out the center console. Turn on the a/c Where the vents are, stick your hand in all the way and see if there is a flap. You'll know if you opened it if you feel air blowing. For mine I cut a coat hanger to size, bent it, and braced the flap open against the console. See if that helps

If you do this you will never have defrost...or you will just have to pull your center console every time you want to swap from face vents to defrost and vice versa so...

Had this problem and used a vacuum line tester to make sure everything inside worked. Ended up being the vacuum line connection on the engine

I had the same problem for a little bit and mine was just a vacuum line broke by the fire wall just behind the intake manifold.

The small 1/4" line that goes into the passenger side corner of the engine bay is for vent controls, check it.
