Tire width

So I've heard several things about tire width, and I'm a little confused.

Let's say you have 225 55/r16 tires
I've always thought that 225 is the width of the tire and 55 is the height. However, several people are telling me that 225 is the height and 55 is the width. I was wondering if anyone could clarify this for me? Thanks

The 225 is the width in millimeters and the 55 is the sidewall height represented as a percentage of the width.
