Wheel and Rim change! HELP please.

Hey I have a question everyone. I have a set of 225/45R17 tires that look a lot better that I want to put in my mustang. I currently have these on: 215/60R16 but the rims are hideous. I want to put the 17 inch for now until I get some bullitt rims. I know I'll probably have to have my car realigned but will there be any problem with the suspension, more gas usage, or anything funny going on? What do you guys suggest? Any help is highly appreciated. Thank you.

Well, if your current rims are 16`s then you cannot use 17in tires on them.

I'd either save up for some nicer rims or search Craig list for some cheaper takeoff rims

No what I'm trying to say is can I take off my 16 inch wheels and put in my 17 inch wheels? Like just replace them. I have the tires for the rims. I'm not stupid, I know I can't put the 17 inch rims in 16 inch tires. I'm saying can I take off my 16 inch tires and replace them with 17 inch tires? Will it affect the suspension, more gas usage, mess anything up? I know I'll need an alignment done, correct?

Oh my mistake. Ya you can swap your 16's out for 17's. I would say as long as your car is currently aligned properly and the 17's are not cupped you shouldn't need an alignment.

I'd say your speedo won't be affected enough to make a noticeable difference.

I believe I do need an alignment because I notice while driving on the 17s that if I set the steering wheel perfectly straight (in the middle) the car starts to go towards the left. When I had the 16s it didn't do that. So with the 17s I have to tilt the steering wheel to the right a bit to keep it from going to the left. But it's nothing major it's just about 1/4 of an inch to the right that I have to tilt the steering wheel. Thanks for the input tho! I wasn't sure if I should do it tho cuz of the change of the wheel size. But the diameters are also different, that won't affect anything. Correct?

I don't think you'll have any problems. I switched from 225/55/16's to 275/40/17's in the front and 325/35/17's in the rear and didn't have any problems. The car felt sluggish and actually was slightly slower as the additional rotational mass was working against acceleration.

Ur problem is not alignment its ur tires are worn unevenly. U see this a lot in trucks with bigger tires. If u r off ware by more than 3/32 u will notice a pull to one side or the other. The proper size change how ever from a 60R16 to the 17s would be a 50 or 55 so your 45 series tires might effect ur speedo just slightly. As far as the suspension there should be no issues at all.

Well I put them on and it did pull and after taking them to re-align it drives good. The only problem I'm noticing it when driving. When I turn I hear a squeaky-ish noise and the steering wheel is a bit stiffer than normally. Also in what way will my speed change? Will my meter read 40mph but I'm actually going 45 or I'll be going 40mph but actually going 35? I'm sure it's not that drastic of a change but it's an example.

So I'll actually be going slower than what my speed reads or faster? Like am I going to 20mph on the gauge but I'm actually going 23 or what?
