Lightbulb "Fun to drive" says Shelby . . . .

Here's some v6 facts from the man himself - Mr. Mustang Performance- Carroll Shelby.

"Shelby engineers tell us the Terlingua car is about 200 lb. lighter in the engine compartment than the V-8s, and feels it." . . . .

. . . . "Turning to our Terlingua Mustang, I asked if this car was a change in direction, to get better fuel mileage out of the Shelby cars."

"Absolutely. This horsepower race is a bunch of b---s---, but you have to keep up with the Germans. We have to make a certain number of high horsepower cars because some people want them — and you magazine journalists like to write about horsepower — but I figure it's about over. I hope it is. Supercars have never been my deal; we need to go back to affordable performance. I like lighter cars that are fun to drive. I've always loved pocket-rockets.

"Back when I was building the Shelby cars for Chrysler," he continued, "people said I was going to ruin my reputation by building smaller cars. Well, I don't give a s--- about my reputation; I just want to build cars that I like to drive. Cars like the V-6 Mustang. It's lighter and more fun to drive, and someone else will always have more horsepower."

No, I'm not "drinking the Shelby kool-aid" - but the new Terlingua should outperform the GT350 (now discontinued) & at a slightly lower price, with some nice & expensive upgrades added - Terlingua 245ci (vs GT350 - 281ci) - like:

+ 20" Custom Wheels & Tires (vs factory 18's)

+ Custom Hood w/Custom Paint (vs small scoop on factory hood)

+ 375hp (vs 330)

+ 3.73 gears (vs 3.55)

+ 14" - 6 piston brakes

+ Rear quarter window delete (NOT a step forward)

+ Lighter weight = better power to weight

+ Painted Stripes (vs vinyl)

+ Pick your color (vs take ours)

+ Auto Trans option? (none with GT350 except for Hertz)

No, it's not cheap, Shelby never was. But it appears far more performance oriented for less $$$ then was previously offered as the GT350 (s197).

Affordable is relative. Lots of guys who don't "need" v8's are spending similar $$$ for 4 cyl Subaru STI's & Mitsuibishi Evo's, or even more $$$ yet for 6cyl BMW's . . . .

I think it's a pretty cool direction for Shelby.

Vaya con Dios.

Has anyone ever only paid $43,000 for a GT500? I would find that extremely hard to believe.

Holy ****. $40k (Base $20k+package)! I guess though if you have the money and dont want something alot of others have, this would be a good alternative. Surely make alot of higher end/higher priced cars start to rethink their vehicle of choice after seeing a few laps from that thing.

but CS is right. The only reason we need 550hp+ power plants is to lug that 4,000lbs out of the turns in a decent manner. shed 1000lbs off and you can cut that 550hp down to 300hp and do the exact same lap times. Power to Weight ratio is one of the most important parts of racing, hell any racing, Shelby knows this. I may not like the guy for whoring his name out, but he knows his ****.

I have heard / seen posts of more and more paying sticker or a touch under sticker~ but you are 100% correct... I would say 85-90% of all gt500s purchased were more than they should have been (sticker).... I wouldnt pay more than sticker... hell why pay 60k for a gt500 when you can get a new z06 for 10k more.

Re: "Fun to drive" says Shelby . . . .

GT500 = $43k?

GT500's had been selling for $15k - $25k over MSRP here - & all cars are LOADED.

Now the going price seems to be $5k - $10k over msrp & all cars are still LOADED.

I do appreciate the GT500.

I haven't driven one - doesn't it understeer quite badly, being so nose-heavy?

Personally, I don't find nose-heavy cars fun to drive, other than in a straight line . . . .

(which I think is Shelby's point . . . .)

Cool Re: "Fun to drive" says Shelby . . . .

I don't disagree.

Shelbys have always been expensive - which is why not that many were ever sold, even in the 60's.

Total Shelby AC Cobra production was only 1,003.

Total Shelby Mustang production production (65-70) was 13,821.

The S197 GT500 is built by Ford, not Shelby.

Building low volume vehicles is a costly endeavor - that very few ever make pay-off.

How do you make a small fortune as a specialty auto manufacturer?

Start with a large fortune.

Vaya con Dios.

Re: "Fun to drive" says Shelby . . . .

It's way over priced for the lack of performance it gives. 20" wheels are NOT a performance upgrade - they are a downgrade. Buying a name is pointless. And that is what you are paying for.... and not even a good name at that.
Go do some research on the beloved Shelby, and find out why he and Ford parted ways back in the day.

Re: "Fun to drive" says Shelby . . . .

you can find gt500s nearly anywhere for sticker now... dont believe the dealership hype on these cars... and for a heavy car with as much weight on the front as it does you would be surprised at how good it handles.

I wish ford had just made the gt500 into the cobra model and mabe made 2k specialty shelby cobras a year at most~ they currently are flooding the markets with them... they made 19k 03/04 cobras... the gt500s will blow that number out of the water.
