Help? Stupid mistake 😩

Ok so I have a buddy with a 95 v6 auto and he was driving his car in the rain and forgot to take off his cold air intake. So now he says his car idles weird like it drops to where it wants to almost shut off but it doesn't and it's blowing a bit of white smoke out of the exhaust. He also claims it's hesitant when accelerating. Any ideas as to what might be wrong?

Someon correct me if I'm wrong, but you can drive with a cold air intake in the rain, or even snow. I don't think it's the air intake that's the problem unless the filter sucked in a bunch of water and it got into the engine. You could try replacing the intakes filter if the filter got ruined.

Yeah I don't really understand how water would get in there unless 1. He put it in a stupid place or 2. He drove through a foot of water because I've driven in the rain many times with mine and no problems

Can you be more specific, when you use the term white smoke?(how much smoke, does it come out for only a little bit or the entire time the engine is running , is it a deep smoke or light smoke, etc) be as descriptive as possible. Also are there any fluid leaks? When was the last time the car had a tune up?

It was one of those days where it was pouring and streets were flooded that is why the filter got soaked. Light white smoke coming out of the tailpipe it only did that for the first 2-3 days and he said he heard a popping noise but that too has stopped. The only thing now is that it feels like it's hesitant when accelerating. No fluid leaks but he has changed the spark plugs and the oil just in case.

Bad coil maybe. My 03 6 cyl had #2 cyl go out. My cats also got stopped up and made the car sluggish.

If he sucked water in the intake he could have burnt a piston? Are there any check engine lights on? Run a computer scan on it! When he changed oil was it dis colored like chocolate milkshake?have him run an intake/injector cleaner (3 step kind).

coils, or the filter catched hell. Cold air induction is not about hiding from the rain or snow.

I have had those aftermarket cold air induction systems on all my cars (25 years passed by). Never seen them to fail me in that manner.

It sounds to me that the filter got wet and steam cleaned the inside of the engine for 2-3 days and clogged up the cats.

I would replace the filter, check to see if your cats are clogged, maybe now could be a good time for a tune up.
