Output shaft issue?

Ok, my first post/ question.
Long story short I was replacing my output shaft seal and noticed on my 00' v6 standard, there's a small hole about a 1/4 inch in size, behind where that seal goes. It looks rough like it got punched out, but part of me thinks it just wasn't cleaned smooth from the factory?
Knowledgeable input would be greatly appreciated, pics will be up!
