Is it dying?

My '99 sixer, seems to be having a lot of issues as of late. Here's what I've done to it to start. (Engine wise)

Delta Diablo chip
MAC cold air intake
Dual exhaust
(sorry that's it thus far)

Car has 66,000 miles.

During acceleration I am getting, what seems to be, a lot of valve noise. The car shutters and jerks along as I am accelerating. Lot's of misfires. I get this in either chip mode, using reg gas or super. About 2000-3000 miles ago I replaced the spark plugs.

Where should I go from here? Tomorrow I'm planning on looking through the engine bay to look for an obvious signs of wear on either wiring or vacuum lines, and make sure the filter is clean. Anything else I should look for?

Re: Is it dying?

I would revert to the stock program and remove the programmer/chip for now to ensure thats not it. Check the plugs and make sure they look ok and are gaped right.

If you still have issues check your coil pack/wires~

Re: Is it dying?

Like Brandon suggested pull the chip !! If your using one of the tune that came with the chip it may not be right for you .Most can tunes suck Spend the money and get it on a dyno

Do an injector cleaning, check the EGR system Or it could just be cheap gas run 93 your problem really sounds detonation which produes pinging and even knocking sounds
Do Not Mix Grades of gas you can't run 87 stock then switch to chip mode and expect it to run right

Re: Is it dying?

Unless the chip has failed I doubt that is the problem. The chip went in the car at around 10,000 miles... maybe even less. It's been in for years with no problems. Within the last 6-10 months is when things started going bad.

Pull the chip and see how it runs. At least that way you have eliminated that as a cause.Still sounds like a detonation problem to me

Re: Is it dying?

dont assume anything, usually that leads to issues. You simply never know~ you can do other things first if you wish just keep it on the table.

Re: Is it dying?

Well what does it take to remove and reinstall a chip? 15 minutes? Might as well if these cats are saying it could still be the problem..

Re: Is it dying?

First I turned the chip off...
No difference.

Then I pulled it...
No difference.

Hopefully later today I can start checking some of the other items.

Chris

Re: Is it dying?

A little update.

I finally had a chance to check the gap on the plugs. They all need to be re-gaped. They are now at .52. I also replaced the fuel filter, which needed to be done anyway. The return airline off of the CAI had a crack in it so I replaced it as well...

Guess what?

No change. I'm really starting to get frustrated.

A couple of have mentioned the EGP system, how do I go about testing for that without randomly starting to replace parts?

Chris
