3.73 gears?

I have a stock 01 v6 and I was looking for some improvements and a buddy of mine suggested 3.73 gears. The main reason is so I'm not really one of those 'one tire fire' kind of people but the added launch is a bonus I'm looking forward to. How much do they usually cost and what kinds of benefits would I get from it?

Best mod I put on my green Mustang. A Mustang shop will have to install them. Have to use Gear oil and Ford friction modifier.
REALLY changes the whole experience of driving the car. ESPECIALLY when you have a sweet exhaust system!
Do it!!
Also, **ONLY purchase Ford Racing gears, almost forgot.
Have Fun!!

-No problem. Send me a private message anytime.
I modded up my V6 100% with exception of a blower. I should be able to help out somehow.
-Research Mustang shops in your area, start a relationship. They will come in handy every now and again. Gears should be done by a Mustang shop (as apposed to any mechanics shop), front end alignment with bumpsteer kits, CMU tuning, T45 clutch install, and some others.

The Most Popular Route To Take To Having A Much Quicker Car With New Set Of Gears Goes Kinda Like SO:
-Automatic transmission= 4:10 gears
-Manual transmission- 3:73 gears
-Only purchase Ford Racing gear sets.
-Fill with 75/90W Amsoil with 4 oz. FRRP friction modifier. Use the friction modifier no matter the Loc set up, it wont hurt a thing. 80/90W is used by some others.
**I say, it's a perfect time to install that MGW short throw shifter onto the T45 and change the transmission fluid also.

***Installing a MGW shifter is another one of the few mods that change the dynamics and driving experience as if in a different car, SWEEEET!
-Fluid change is easy, need 4 quarts of Mobil1 automatic trans fluid. Penns Syncromesh can also be used, Per:Borg Warner.
-I personally run Mobil1 ATF in the transmission, and in the power steering sump. Nice fresh fluids everywhere, all the time, make me happy.
~Like I had said, I have thrown everything, almost everything possible at it with exception of a blower. It is a GREAT car to drive. I love it as much as the Cobra, they are just different animals, is all.

Stock is 2.73 I think; someone correct me if I'm wrong. The higher the number the shorter the gears. Shorter gears (higher number) will give you more 'get up and go'. You will lose some mpg's on the highway. Like robb stated above, it really depends on your transmission: 3.73 is generally recommended for manuals due to drivability and 4.10's for automatics.

It should have 3.27 in it, I went to 3.73 did it myself but I have several years experience doing auto repair. I can say it made a huge difference on how the car drives probably best mod I've done yet.

Curious, is your Mustang a stick or auto? I have an auto and don't want to go as high as 4:11, drive to the beach and such, would be to hard on her with 4:11, in my opinion. I would think 3:73 would still be a vast improvement over stock.

Mine is a stick and I thought the same thing about 3.73 I would bet 4.11 will be fine in it with auto, I kinda wish I went with 4.11 on mine but then my 75mph rpm would be to high. The auto is geared higher than the 5 speed so 4.11 should do good for you.
