shaking and loss of acceleration

On trips of 3-4 hours, my 2001 Mustang begins to feel like it is not getting fuel. The gas pedal is non-responsive and the car starts to shake very badly. There is plenty of fuel, oil and water. The "check Engine" light is always on because I have not replaced the catalytic converter. This has happened three times now on the road, but my mechanic cannot duplicate the problem to diagnosis it or fix it.
Any ideas?

I would begin by replacing the fuel filter if you haven't already done it.
And check for any new codes. There may have been another one that has been triggered, that is unrelated to the catalytic converter code.

Thanks. I have had the fuel filter replaced after the gas tank was replaced but I believe it needs to be done again. My mechanic doesn't agree but I'm going to insist

i'd be considering the cat.....if you've already done the filter why would it need to be re-done?

I had a truck that would act this way, turned out the coil would begin to misfire when it got hot. Attach a timing light to one of your wires when it starts acting up to see if the pulse is erratic.

Well from what you wrote especially about the cat it may be clogged and when it's getting hot enough causing the shaking and such just my opinion

I can tell you that a clogged cat can cause catastrophic results in an engine. I have a Dodge Ram Quad Cab sitting in my driveway waiting for me to locate an engine.

I had that problem a few years back with my 2001. I thought it was cats as well but it was a faulty egr valve, sensor and gas cap. It was a hot mess basically. Hope this helps!
