Engine Noise @ 2000 RPM +

Recently I made a trip in my car 2000 miles in distance. Through the trip I noticed a loud sound similar to a semi truck down shifting to break BBRRRRRR. It would make it when cruising at over 2000 rpm and only when I let go of the gas and was decelarating on a cruise. When I gave it gas the sound would go away. If I gave it just a little gas it was fine but releasing the gas would create a loud noise from the engine bay. I did need an oil change and have done it since then. I haven't heard it anymore but concerned it was a sign something was wrong. I also have known to have a small exhaust manifold leak, but it's never been so bad and I don't hear the noise anymore. Any area or ideas for cause of problem? I thought SOMEONE would have experienced this problem and can be of help. Thank you.

What do you recommend I do? Do I really need to buy aftermarket headers...if so which are most economical/performace sensible? Also it wouldn't make sense to buy aftermarket headers if I plan on going with a turbo in the future right, cuz the turbo will require custom headers...how should I approach this?

you dont need aftermarket headers if thats the issue, you can get a set of oem ones (or just one) for dirt cheap

I think it might end up being my jake brake after all. I talked to a mechanic and he said he could fix it for about $60. You think that's a fair deal?

You do know he was kidding about the jake brake, right? Only 18 wheelers have a jake brake.....cars do not have one, so i would say thats a horrible deal, haha

Yes I just wanted to get someone's reaction. I quickly typed in jake brake and got the wiki answer. Thanks for the help. I think it will end up being my exhaust manifolds. I have thought about pacesetter longtubes. Anyone have something to say about them?
