I need help deciding what dual exaust to put on my 6 cyl.

I am about to put duals on my 2000 ford mustang. And I have a couple options i can do. 1 I can do an H pipe off the cats and do a offbrand of a flowmaster and go straight down without any tailpipes. 2 or i can not do an H pipe and go straight out the back of the cats and put thost offbrands on it and have tailpipes. But which one should i do? Because I heard if i dont have tailpipes it will be really loud up in my car. So do H pipes really make that big of a difference?

Re: I need help deciding what dual exaust to put on my 6 cyl.

the best thing to do is buy a dual exhaust adaptor and have it welded on for starters, why???? so you dont weld the exhaust on to turn your Y to an H and thus lose the ability to remove the exhaust if you need to~ its all welded and will have to be cut

After this you can bolt up any catback for a gt mustang you wish~ you just need to change the exhaust hangers since you dont have bumper cut outs. Dont go to loud, v6s dont sound good due to the even fire setup they have... they are ok till about 2500 rpms then its all down hill from there. Mellow tone is the best way to go, louder is not always better.

Re: I need help deciding what dual exaust to put on my 6 cyl.

Ive heard with the x pipe it heats up your trans. really bad though.
And I dont have enough money to go with the flowmaster but there is an aftermarket brand of a flowmaster that i am putting on it. So i think i am just going to do the H pipe and then instead of getting tips on it just bend it down over the axle.

X pipe heats the trans? Wow, first time I've heard that one. The only difference between the X and the H is the shape it makes where they join together, so, if an X heats your trans, then so will an H. Just an FYI.

We can add that one to Urban Myths

Pic of Y pipe and X Pipe --- Whoever told you it will cause your trans to overheat Don't let them touch your car

Re: I need help deciding what dual exaust to put on my 6 cyl.

an h pipe is supposed to give a deeper sound. but on a v6 an o/r h pipe (or at least the setups i have heard) sound too much like a truck to me, as well as pretty choppy. the choppiness can be eliminated alot by just using a chambered muffler (ie flowmaster)

i've had about 6 or 7 different exhaust setups on my car, my current setup is what i like the best. not too loud, not too quiet. nice, relatively deep, consistent hum at idle and not too raspy or "airy" when you lay into the throttle.

if you got the cash to drop on it though, i have also heard a v6 with a borla xr1 catback on it. i think he might have had the stock y pipe on it though but it sounded pretty good too.....its kinda pricey though

Re: I need help deciding what dual exaust to put on my 6 cyl.

I had the stock Y pipe and just flowmaster 40's (cut the Y pipe after the cats and made it into two pipes aka true dual exhaust, then ran it out to tips using 2.25 inch pipe (no bigger)

Saw this a little while ago . . . .

"Another tactic would be to fit a true dual exhaust, as V-6 engines prefer two separate three-cylinder exhaust systems with no H or X crossovers.

While more expensive, such systems can definitely aid power with forced induction and often sound more V-8-like than rasp-can given the Mustang's generous six-cylinder displacement. It just depends on what you're listening for." 5.0 Mustang Magazine - Online

Would you please elaborate? Thanks.

Vaya con Dios.

Im really thinking about getting that setup. Either that or the mac catback... Do you have any videos of you reving it or drivebys? Also do you thinkit would sound good with just a cai as the only other performance upgrade?

Just got Steeda's V-6 Cat-Back Stainless Steel Dual tips with Borla's dual exhaust on my Pony - I am very impressed with the sound. It sounds like the Cobra down the street yet it's only a 232.

My exhaust...but to get this sound, it will take a little more modification than you might want to do...
