Low on fluid usually makes a groaning noise.

Sometimes, if you turn the wheel as far as it'll go in one direction the pump will make noises, that is normal if it only happens when you hit the stops.

If it's noisy just turning it a bit then check the fluid.

Mine too

Does the normal sound seem like a squealing noise? Could that be a loose belt??

I think the fluid level is fine.

on cars with serpentine belts we usually don't have a problem with loose belts much, unless its the wrong size or really worn out bad. That is because you have a tensioner there to keep it snug.

well the first thing I would check is the fluid, mine seemed to be louder than normal and the steering fluid was nasty and milky. There was a considerable amount of entrained water in the steering fluid. once I changed it the noise level decreased by 50%. Actually the Ford power steering unit is a fairly noisey
