2001 Auto Tranny Hesitant Shifting

Okay, so I friend of mine has an '01 V6 Auto. Did a bit of a tune up on, changed the oil, new spark plugs and wires (misfire in cylinders #2 and #3, corrected). Took it out for a test drive and felt slightly better, engine did anyways.

However the transmission seems to be hesitant to shift through gears, and is very slow. Tranny fluid was clean, but low so some was added.

It is very possible that the girl who drives it beats the **** out of it.

So have you guys heard of any problems, fixes, or any ideas as to what it can be? Any recommendations?

Re: 2001 Auto Tranny Hesitant Shifting

There's a known hesitation at about 45 that can be felt cruising through the auto trannies...

As far as hesitant shifting...I'd recommend looking at getting it flushed at the dealer. Costs about 125 bucks but it's worth it IMO.

Re: 2001 Auto Tranny Hesitant Shifting

^ you can do that or you can go to any aamco transmission shop and have it diagnosed for free incase something's not acting right. ford's autocraptic transmissions were known to slip with abuse, so i'd have it checked out. may be simple as a flush, but would'nt hurt to check it all out.

Re: 2001 Auto Tranny Hesitant Shifting

I know Ford's auto isn't the greatest, but each shift was just too delayed, so we couldn't blame it on that.

Appreciate the help guys, I'll have 'em bring it to Aamco and get it checked out, let them know a flush would be a good idea too.

Yeah will do. It's actually my friend's girlfriends sister's car (it was just easier to say friend). My friend should be getting the car this weekend, since the sister is going away, and he can drive it around and feel it out. As soon as he gets the chance he's going to take it to Aamco. When I hear back from it I'll let you all know.

Re: 2001 Auto Tranny Hesitant Shifting

So Aamco is saying it's definitely not the transmission and is an engine problem and they need some more time to diagnostic it. I actually just dropped my friend off to pick it up.

So we are thinking it is a fuel delivery problem, either fuel pump, filter or injectors. Not to sure what it can be after that.

Re: 2001 Auto Tranny Hesitant Shifting

You should try and check the TPS before anything. If it is faulty, it will actually throw the tranny and shifting all out of whack. When I thought my TPS was at fault for a high idle, I ordered a new one. I put it on and before I got it configured for my motor the tranny felt really weird. However the motor ran fine. Took it to the dealer to get it configured and then it felt normal again. Scared me at first, I thought I went from high idle to screwed up transmission. I can't find it right now but I used to have an article that told me how to check the TPS to see if its faulty or not. It's just an idea since aamco said the shifting wasn't related with the transmission.

Re: 2001 Auto Tranny Hesitant Shifting

He (my friend) changed the oil filter and he mentioned to me about the TPS and idle control valve, so I'm about to look into that now.

I thought I remember somewhere on here there was an article about it (configuring the TPS, or something with the TPS) so I'm going to do a quick search for that now. If you find or come across that article I'd really appreciate it if you could forward it to me.

Setting the Mustang TPS Voltage

I believe that's it. I'm just not sure if the 5.0s have the same voltage for the TPS as the sixes.

Ah! Thank you very much! I also came across this.

Yeah a bit of relief that it's not the tranny, but we're all just hoping it's an easy DIY fix, as if people hope for complex hard expensive fixes

Re: 2001 Auto Tranny Hesitant Shifting

if you dont change your auto trans fluid every year or at least 20k miles that may be your problem and it may be to late to correct~

Hmm... Yeah i'm pretty sure she never even thought of that. Looks like I'll be learning how to do a tranny fluid change this weekend.
