2001 DPFE replacement

I have a 2001 3.8L V6 mustang that just had the CEL come on. I checked and found a 401 code. From my research on various sites, I've found out that this most likely means the DPFE needs to be replaced. I went to O'Reilly and bought a replacement, but I have two problems.

The DPFE that I bought doesn't look exactly like the one on the car. The spacing of the two pipes and the electrical connector seems to be the same, but the rest of the sensor is wider, but thinner than the one on the car. Should I be worried about this?

The second problem is that, while I can get the electrical connector off, I can't seem to separate the sensor from the two pipes. I've tried pulling up on it with quite a bit of force, and tried wiggling it. Any suggestions on how to get it off? Is there something I'm missing?

I wish I could find my camera to take pictures of the two sensors, but I guess that'll have to wait.

Thanks in advance!

Re: 2001 DPFE replacement

No it not a problem. Whats always worked for me is you take a pair of pliers and twist the 2 hoses and they will break free. The connector you jsu have to make sure the tab is pushed all the way down and pull. It should come off. Unless there is a metal wire running around the plug. You seperate the wire from the plug first. Or you pull the plastic tab ouut from under the tab you push on. If it has the plastic stopper tab.

Re: 2001 DPFE replacement

Thanks! That tip really helped. I had tried prying that thing out several times, but after a couple minutes of twisting the hoses it came right out! Cleared the code and it hasn't come back.

Thanks again!

Re: 2001 DPFE replacement

Thanks. Wish I could say the same for my PT Cruiser. It's also a 2001, but it has 173,000 miles on it. Just in the last month I've had to replace an EGR valve, valve cover gasket, and fan assembly to the total of $1,000 (but, I'll say that that's really the only thing I've ever had done to it). My parents keep advising me to try to make it last another year (I'm in pharmacy school, severely in dept, but should be guaranteed a job that pays 6 figures in 1 1/2 years). I love the car, but it's time to sell it, I think. In one year, I'll put an average of 36,000 miles on it. If anyone wants a PT for local driving, let me know
