power steering issues - Mustang Evolution

power steering issues

Alright, I need to replace my power steering fluid. There's plenty of it, but it is the same color as this font. BLACK.

I don't know how to drain the little reservoir thing, or if that's necessary. I checked it cuz the car was making this sound, and one of my friends w/ an F-150 said he had the same sound, filled up his power steering, and it was all fine. Any help is appreciated, thanks.

To drain it use a hose and siphon it into a bucket or disconnect the pressure line and turn the car on it will pump it out in no time

Just another quick note... you probably already know...

After you replace the fluid do not forget to bleed the system to remove all air. It's not difficult.

I will have to go look at my car but normally High pressure lines have swedged fittings on the end and return lines have hose clamps on them. But I will not swear to that until I go look

Hey WhiteStang,

I chatted with a friend of mine who suggested to replace the fluid with a "flush". Under NO circumstances do you want the pump to run dry. He suggests, if I am relaying it correctly (please check with a mechanic):

Disconnect the fluid return line to the reservoir then plug the return line port on the reservoir.

Put the return line into something to collect the fluid (i.e. milk carton). By the way, make sure you have a lot of power steering fluid on hand. Also, you may want to find a way to hold the return line in the carton so it doesn't jump out as you do this.

Open the reservoir -- make sure it is filled to the top. Without touching the steering wheel yet, and leaving the cap off the reservoir, turn the car over with the ignition switch until the fluid level drops. It won't take much. Turn off the engine.

Just keep topping of the reservoir, spin the engine, top it off, spin the engine etc.

Once the fluid going to the milk carton is clean, while continuing to add fluid in this manner, turn the engine over while turning the steering wheel from side to side (don't turn it all the way to the stops!). Continue this too until the fluid runs out clean.

Hook the return line back up and leave the reservoir open. Start the car and turn the steering wheel a few times slowly (don't hit the stops). Check the reservoir again. There should be no air bubbles. If the level has dropped the system is bleeding the air out -- add more fluid. Do this a few times to make sure there is no air in the system.

Once you don't have to add any more fluid your done. Check it again the next morning. Overnight it should bleed the rest of the air.

That's it. Easier than installing a Billet accelerator pedal!

The only one you have to worry about is the return line to the reservoir. Just follow where you check the fluid.

ill let yall know how it goes when I get the chance to try it. I work out of town and I have to go to birmingham wednesday, so I've been driving the honda (bleh, i know...) accord for the gas mileage.
