Either 5.0 or MM&FF did a whole article on modding a 2.3L. There are people that mod them. Google is your friend

I know but for 400 dollars he gets a new motor that he can rebuild. God Knows what the current one has been through

try racerwalsh.com

a co-worker has an 80-something 2.3 and he's doing the quarter mile in the low 12s. i swear! it took him 3 engines to get it right though.

find a wrecked thunderbird turbo coupe, hack up the wiring harness to make it work, and there ya go, high 15's to start with

full exhaust, moving a few vacume lines, making an intake, a few odds and ends, you could have a mid 14 second car with ease

Yeah, the turbo 4 banger is a whole nother beast altogether.
But the N/A 4 banger is an anemic dog.
I will see if we have access to anything that can help.

Aside from the TURBO off the 2.3TC ford sells a race head, headers, and some lopey cams for them since theyre very popular on dirt tracks.

I say swap over the equipment from the turbo coupe motor and just be careful since your naturally aspirated 2.3 will have cast pistons rather than forged like the turbo motor.Just dont get taken away with the boost.

Before swapping my 2.3 out for the 331 i had glass packs and duals on the 2.3 and belive it or not it rumbled like a very stock v8.

what he said.

with the top of the line stuff, which i'm sure you're not interested in (esslinger), you can build yourself a 300rwhp n/a 2.3, or a built 800rwhp+ turbo'd TC motor. keep in mind the single esslinger head is 4k... i like oddities like the 2.3 going fast, but not for 4k. 4k is enough for a 5.0 swap and bang, 14's and a huge aftermarket.

a 300rwhp 2.3L??? I don't think so. Even with my 4.2 it's tough, and I have top of the line stuff. I say the max for that engine is more like 300hp with a turbo. They can be quick little devils because they're so light to begin with, but if you're serious about modding it, I know I recently saw a article in the MM&FF or 5.0 mustang where a kid beefed his 2.3 up pretty good. I'll see if I can find that magazine again cause it might provide a basis for you to start your search.

The Turbo swap is definitely fun. Have had my car a year now and it has been turbo'ed since August. It is probablly the best bang-for-your buck mod for the 2.3's.

Turboing a 2.3NA can work you would have to run very little boost. Low boost on these engines is not so much fun. I ran mine for a while with the stock wastegate (9psi) and it was okay. I put on an adjustable boost valve (don't forget a bigger fuel pump) and am now running 15psi.

The difference between 2.3/2.3Turbo is like a driveable version of the book Dr Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. The best part about the 2.3Turbo is that if you drive it nicely (meaning no fun) you still get 4cyl gas mileage. The best I have managed is 26.6MPG, but that is because I don't have the will not to use the turbo.

The swap is much less involved than a 5.0 swap, little wiring, the engine/trans/etc. just bolt right where they belong.

the wiring is the only difficult part, i havnt done the research on it, i cant see it being too horrible, especially if you use the 85-86 turbo coupe wiring harness, since the 87-88's have the PRC, ABS, and all that other crap tied in

did you swap a turbo head on your car, or did you just swap the manifolds, turbo, and all of that onto an NA 2.3L? ae you running intercooled?

Bird, the wiring is not so hard. I know sites where they have the pinout diagrams and such. It was the hardest part though. The sites also have step-by-step instructions

The 91-93 2.3's are going to be the hardest because you have to change it from a DIS setup to one with at standard distributor.

The 87-93's are the easiest. For mine I just had to move about 4 or 6 pins on the computer harness, and use the wires from the existing EGR for the VAM wiring.

I would say that the turbo swap could be done in a weekend if you really pushed it. I did an auto to 5-speed swap with mine at the same time. I also took about 2-3 weeks because I didn't need a car that bad and I spent a lot of time cleaning stuff up.

ive heard of people also keeping the DIS setup, i know ChuckW did when he swapped a 2.3T into his ranger

i guess it depends on how far you want to go with the swap, and what you want to do

i got my 87 TC, so i never had to do any homework on the swaps, i got the engine i want in the car i want...other than my 3.8 bird i have...
